| A hard night pays off To say the least, it was a rough night and I was glad to be cowering in my Bivvy out of the cold driving rain - which was blowing straight onto my swim. Where I was fishing, had never produced any Zander for me before and I had blanked there about 12 times last year (including New Years Eve!) But its a location I really felt could produce a big fish for me and I was hoping for just one run. Kevin, came around for a coffee, before his long drive home, and we had a chat - about Zander fishing of course! As the night went on I planned to wake up early and change over to deadbait and maybe put a fresh mackerel tail out for a - Hopefully! - large Pike. Not much happened during the night, other than a nasty incident involving all my rods ending up on the floor in a big tangle (don't ask!), so the aim of changing one of my rods over for Pike never happened - Thankfully! So at 5;00am, I recast all three and set about the horrible task of packing up all my wet muddy gear. 10 minutes later the middle rod screamed off and my first thought was - early morning Pike. however, from the fight, I could tell this was a good fish and I kept my fingers crossed. As the fish came up in the water I was greeted by the lovely sight of the reflection from a large Zanders eyes. The fish went easily in the net and was quickly unhooked - into the safety Weigh sling and onto the Avon scales. After weighing and removing the Weigh Slings weight the fish went 15lb 10oz!! Well beating my previous best by a pound and a half, caught exactly 2 years ago. My poor attempts at self photography, managed to get me a half decent photograph and its only now that I'm starting to realise what a great fish this is and also how lucky I can sometimes be! Big thanks to Kevin, who over the past 6 months has taught me more about Zeds, the Fens, and refining my methods than I could have learned on my own in 10 Years. Without his advice, I don't think I would have caught this one, cheers Mate! ![]() Last edited by baitmaster; 02-10-2007 at 09:31 AM. |
