Coloured Water

Hi Guys
Maybe if you,ve read my post on going fishing/catch reports page that i had a blank last night while out to catch Zander.
My question was about the really coloured water that we had ,is the coloured water a bad thing for Zander fishing.
We fished roach deads punctured and or heads cut off in an attempt to get the juices flowing and also lamprey section which gives off plenty of juice has any one any tips what we could of tried to give us a better chance or is it a case we were flogging a dead horse.
Or could the Zander be feeding in the daylight in such dirty conditions.

regards robm

Re: Coloured Water

ok coloured water is very good for zander and i for one feel its a bonus to see it like that especially if the drain has been clear for a while .
but they will be more confident in feeding during the day in these conditions
(but feeding times change through the season month by month )
this will be cause water conditions change through during the winter (optimum conditons )
now zander love low light conditions and coloured water this allows them to ambush there prey better .
these conditions normally happen more often after periods of heavy rains or very strong winds if your canals flows while its coloured this will make very good zander conditions .
but there,s more to it than just waiting for the water to colour up cause if it was just down to that to catch zander then every body would be doing it .
coloured water is just one of the so called optimum times but this in no way means that cause its an optimum condition you will catch .
over cast days, fog ,mild weather , low pressures these all are good signs of good for zander .
area,s that contain zander can easerly change and will if prey fish move .
over the years i,ve learned that swims that produce well in summer and early autunm don,t all way produce in the winter this is normally due to the roach shoaling up and migrating to there winter quarters and the zander will follow these there .
so its improtant to know where the silver fish shoal up in the winter as this will in turn help you to locate the zander better .

now below is a post i posted up about 18months ago and it might be useful to read as it just give you the basics to locate zander .

FEATURELESS FENS

i have had anglers say to me why do i fish the fens cause they are featureless, not true lets look at it a bit closer there are the obvious features and then there are the less obvious firstly we will start with bridges these attract fish and hold them for long periods and in strong flows fish can hide behind the supports that go into the water but this also has a reverse affect that as these are easely accesssible that they get pressured another feature are bends that changes the flow of water these are by far my favourite feature again not so obvious feature below but they do give away there presents above the water are electric pilons that cross the drains these cause irregular dredging which cause troughs across the drain bed which again allow fish to hold in in colder or strong flow conditions , also where side drains run in but some of these have pumps on them which makes these a more complex feature in terms of when is the best time to fish as the whole nature of the drain is to remove the water as quick as possible and therefore this also applies to side drain and fish will not hide at the entrances of these in strong flows another feature not so obvious is where the bank has washed out and either collasped or has formed a subtle shallow cut the
these both types will allow a disruption to the flow and will allow fish to get out of flows when they occure my preferace with these is to fish a collasped bank more than a cut into the bank . bank side vegetation is another feature which will be obvious to the naked eye such as reed beds , over hanging trees in summer lily pads and cabbages any where fish fish can hide in or under for shelter another feature and probably the most important feature is the far and near side shelves where fish come to feed on and where most of the bank side vegetation grows to allow fish the shelter on the big drain (relief channel ) there are fish holding area put in by the eviroment agency these are to allow the small fish sanctuary in the very strow flows but again in turn will attract preds . so you see they are not featureless but this is by no means every feature you will come across but it will help the novice angler get a start in where would be a good place to start

i hope this is usefull

tightlines
kevin

Re: Coloured Water

Hi kev
Thanks for your reply i will have to read it a few times to take it all in there,s a lot of information there and some very thought provoking stuff.

If i would of been fishing for species other than Zander the other night i wouldn,t of been very confident with the colour of the water at all,i suppose that,s my normal logic, whilst trying to talk a bit of confidence into ourselves while we were there the other night we considered the fact that the Zander has terrific eyesight and maybe the colour wouldn,t matter, but we usually get a few takes in the area where we fished and not having had any action i suppose it was easy to blame the obvious difference from our other trips and that being the colour.
I can see i,m going to have to think a bit different about Zander fishing than i do about my other forms of fishing. But i think that,s one of the things about the Zander that i find attractive.
