new year new start

firstly HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL .
well i,ve not posted up for the last three weeks so and i must admit i,ve missed posting as i thoroughly enjoy writing my reports as much as actually going out and fishing and hopefully catching the fish and any one who has enjoyed my post i apologise for missing a few .
so now we have turned the corner of the 06 /07 season and now into the exciting half of the season where the fish start adding a few extra ounces or so towards the end of the season ready for spawning .
so firstly to catch up on the last couple of weeks i still been going out a catching a few and yes also have managed yet another double before the Christmas break making it my 8th of the season

10lb 1oz
and with still just over two and a half month to go i,m really excited to what possible before the season finally finish .
any way as i said this even was the first of the new year and a venue change was also in order and as all way at this time of year i do tend to move and target another drain which all way fishes well this time of year but not to the point the fish crawl up you rods but any zed capture is a right result .
so i gave Gary (the lure miester) the call to see if he fancied joining me out for a session .
soon we met up and walked the banks of the drain in question and the water was being pulled off and a good rate and Gary was not overly confident that we ought to fish it but i soon convinced him it was the right choice and to cheer him up a bit i told him the barometer reading was spot on in my opinions (1015 mb) ,even though as we look sky ward the heavens was trying to drop loads more rain on to us to try and dampen are enthusiasm .
we choose are swims and set about getting settle in for the evening and with the wind lashing down the drain whipping up the surface and the water also being nicely coloured from the heavy rains of late i felt really confident .
now not sure why but as this is a big drain i do tend to go for a bigger bait as i think it just help s and stands out a bit .
i keep my rigs basically the same as other drains but maybe just lengthen or shorten the paternoster links to suit the venue i,m fishing .
it was not long before Gary brought the first of many coffee,s down for me to drink and we discussed in a little more detail the conditions and what cheered Gary up was they even had slowed the run off down so we could fish further out.
as the session moved on through the evening nothing transpired but i was not at all surprised as this can be a really crueller and as i said patience is the master on this venue .
by 9pm the water was now like a mill pool and the nearly full moon shone brightly down and illuminated every where is that silvery glow and the odd small fish could be seen breaking the surface .
still the session was quiet and by 10pm Gary was starting to think it was all over but then suddenly his end rod sounded and we investigated and sure enough the bobbin was up under his rod and line was being taken off the baitrunner his promptly struck and was attached for a second then it manged to escape .Gary was gutted as he knew he missed a great opportunity to open his 07 account .
interestingly we noticed that the drain was starting to pull harder and the bobbins started to gently all rise towards the rods so we both allowed bows to form in the lines re hang the bobbins on directly under the rods and loosen the bait runner so if a run transpired it would directly take line of a very light baitrunner as i think this is better than using drop off indicators .
we fished on me still confident as i watched the rods like a hawk now while drinking my hundredth coffee of the night .
suddenly my close in paternoster rod sounded and the baitrunner started click click click it went and i was soon investigating it just to make sure a load of weed and not been the cause as i gently picked the rod up i felt a thump on the tip so i imeadiatly struck and the zed was on .Gary was soon there with the net as i gently eased the fish towards the waiting net through the now strong flow and Gary soon with no messy scooped it up .it was soon unhooked and weighed and the scales settled at 9lb exactly.

well not a bad way to start the new year at all .

we fished on for a little while longer and as the weed started to build up we decided to call it a night and i was certainly going to go home very happy indeed especially after catching this very daunting drain .

tightlines
Kevin
