Smile Zander fishing Sat 9th Dec

Hopefully i'm meeting up with Pingu, Mithrandir & Warmit to have a go at some Zander fishing next Saturday on the Sharpness canal. Is anyone else interested in joining us. (Preferably someone who knows something about Zed fishing LOL)

Re: Zander fishing Sat 9th Dec

Right bit of info for you guys as I cannot make it ( althought I know little )

THey are working on the 3 mille bend and this is making the water very murky on the canal so your best bet is to go to the pilot inn stretch as this is were all the match anglers seem to be getting the siver fish now.Plus you can have a beer

Day ticket is £2.50 and can be bought on the bank if a baliff turns up

This stretch is about 40yrds wide ish and goes to about 15 feet in the middle . I suppose you will be fishing in the day light as well so you will need to put your bait ( 3 - 4 inch roach ) right in the middle as this seems to be were they hold up in the day light and on the weekend as there can be a bit of foot traffic plus anglers.

THe flow is not much at all but I always use a 3 oz lead fished on a pop up link or a ledger stem. The reason for this is that they are very shy and will drop the bait at the slightest resistance.

Live bait works very well at dusk , nice 4 inch roach fished just of the bottom a few yards off the bank or fished right on the first drop off which is about 20 foot out seems to work well. Also if its a bit hard going I have had better results with putting in a bit of ground bait about 1 hour before dusk ( say two fish ) as this seems to get the smell into the water and when a zander move through the swim it will hopefully make them stop and hunt for your bait

Getting the fresh bait can be a bit hard but just fish under your rod tip and feed about 10 maggots every cast with about a table spoon of mega hemp and you will def get some nice zander size bait. Oh you will have to recast and bait every 5 mins , so do not just sit on the float as a lot of fish are taken on the drop of the last 5 feet .

Rigs well running lead or float ever one seems to be just as good but it all about offering no resistance to the zander.

Gutted I cannot make it but will PM you a little hot spot were you will get a zander ( might be only a few pounds though )

Hope this helps and as said before Im still getting my head around the place and with work I have not been able to get out lately. But have made a useful link with a preditor angler who knows the water very well

Thumbs up Re: Zander fishing Sat 9th Dec

Thanks Richard, thats some great advice, plus it gives us someone to blame if we all blank again LOL .
Could you PM us some directions on how to get to the Pilot Inn & also let us know where the nearest tackle shop is. Or should we stop off at Veals on the way up?

Re: Zander fishing Sat 9th Dec

Richard,

When you say day ticket for this stretch does it allow any evening or night fishing. If it does then maybe an afternoon and early evening session would be best to improve the chances of a predator coming out to play.

Mike
