Question Sprats for Zander bait

Sprats for Zander bait

With sprats now in the shops just wondering if anyone has caught zander on them.

Ive had good results using sprats for pike plus they are alot cheaper than buying frozen roach ect.. but do they work for zander

Re: Sprats for Zander bait

Already have 1kg in the fridge ready to be wrapped and frozen down for thurs but do not want to get loads of jake pike as if your going zandering thats what you want to catch

Saying that have had quiet alot of double pike on sprats so ......... a fish is a fish when you are freezing cold

Re: Sprats for Zander bait

well i don,t honestly know whether if they would work for zander but saying that if you follow what is said then you would not use any sea baits at all.
but occasionally they have been known to be caught on sea bait even though its rare on most waters but i know from my own session that on one off them my mate had a 11lb 5oz zed on a smelt but that's once in 14 years in our own experiences
now on some waters where sea baits have been used regularly for piking and thrown in at the end of a session has seen zander being caught from that venue more commonly .
i,m firmly in the belief this is still a fairly rare occurrence so i,m going to be sticking with coarse baits until i see sea bait totally out fish coarse baits .
i think sprats are a great pike bait though .

tightlines
Kevin

Re: Sprats for Zander bait

i have only ever had one zander on a sea bait and that was my first ever zed some seven years ago of 6lb 4oz on the cut off on a smelt whilst pike fishing, personally i only use lives for zeds most of the time as i have found them by far a better bait than even coarse deads, i have always found zeds to be much more inclined to be hunters than scavengers, as opposed to pike which i nearly always use a sea dead for.

Re: Sprats for Zander bait

Agree with the Smelt thing - last Feb, I couldnt get a bite on fresh roach on the cut -off changed to Smelt and had 4!

I guess Sprat would work as a wobbled bait, but I wouldnt want to try one as a deadbait for zander - great bait popped up for Pike though

Re: Sprats for Zander bait

i think kev is right in saying where the sea baits are thrown in regularly they will get used to them,
at bury hill last week one of my zeds was caught on a half herring, don't think that happens very often on the fens does it kev ?
