Question Whats your hook size

Whats your hook size ?

OK just to get a general idea of whats the best size for zanders

I got top advice that the best size is 8 -- which I must say in my little world is spot on ( thanks Kev )

But what does everyone else use ??

Re: Whats your hook size

From what I've learnt it depends on bait size.

I believe we ususally use size 8's, however when myself + Kev tried bleak baits the other week we stepped down to size 10's.

Re: Whats your hook size

never fished for zeds rich,in my pike fishing i like to use 6's and 8's i do have some 10's,i tend to use them when using excessively small baits,a size 6 treble looks totally wrong against a small sprat

Re: Whats your hook size

I used to vary between 6-10, but now I only ever use 8's. - Owner Stingers, I find are the best

Onother question is: Barbed, Semi-barbed or Barbless?

Barrie

Re: Whats your hook size

generally hook size is down to bait size that you are using but i will drop hook size if i think the fish are being really finicky or i,ll change to double hooks as these lay better on the fish .
now as far as double hooks i have a load i got from marvic .
but i,m not sure if you can still get them i,ll find out and get back to you

regards
kevin

ZED MAN DAN is on a distinguished road
Re: Whats your hook size

I think Kevs hit the nail on the head you have to use the right size for the bait your using, big baits = big hooks/trebles, i tend to use semi'barbed as theese our easier to remove and as we all know fish handling is a priority, the barbed hook is just used to keep the bait on. if using realy small baits i use a 1/0 single hook. My top tip is to have a selection of traces with different size trebles at different lengths apart. Cause if your using fresh baits u wont know what you got till you've caught Them, Personally i Have atleast 10 New traces to go every session + the Ones already on rthe rods.

Re: Whats your hook size

yes you are right you should all ways have a selection of traces made up i like dan i too have loads of traces made up of varying hook sizes and different, patterns all semi barbed and keep them pinned out in this purpose built rig wallet from fox which has two rig boards in it and at any time it will have around 40 made up traces .
as i like to all way be prepared and its important to spend lots of time watching listening to the water to hear bait fish topping and pike striking ect ect

now some might think is there any need to have so many traces made up ? yes actually as i will change my trace after every fish as traces can kink .twist and i,ve allway felt hooks need to be sharp at all times as you don,t want to loose that fish of a life time cause your hook has not got a good hook hold do you ??
also with zedding when zeds are feeding this can last a very short time indeed and you don,t want to be messing about remaking a particular trace only to find you have missed the feeding spell .

tightlines
kevin
