| Cows, with only one udder! Odd title yes, but if you had seen the thin strip off land I needed to cross to get to my swim you'd understand! I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin and chatting for an hour before setting off for my swim on the drain, i have been meaning to fish for some weeks now. With the rain yesterday the flow through the gates was very strong and I was only hoping I could keep my baits down and manage to set my indicators sensitive enough, but not have the alarms beeping all night. Once I got to the swim, it seems no one has fished it yet this year, I chopped back a small enough area to get my rod tips under the water and decided to fish mono (less likely to be dragged by the flow I think) I was surprised to find i was far enough away from the direct flow, to be able to set up as I wanted - once everything was in place i settled back and waited. At 1:00am I had a couple of single beeps, which didnt turn into anything, at 2:00am the alarm went off properly and I struck quickly into nothing! As I was reeling in I suddenly felt a fish, which must have snatched back at the bait. A very spritely Pike of just over 8lb was landed - it declined publicity, so I returned it straight away -and I got the rod rebaited and back out. That was my lot for the night, but in the morning I noticed a lot of what seemed to be Perch, striking at Fry. It just so happened I had some Lob's so I took a trace off and replaced it with a mono length and size 8 Super Specialist. 2 minutes after this was put out the alarm screamed off and I landed a lovely condition Perch of 1lb 12oz. Given that this drain is really ignored by anyone other than Zander anglers, I think someone fishing properly for the Perch would have had a hell of a good session. By then the cows where gathering around and it was time to make my escape before my good lady rang a second time to see where i was On reflection it was a good change of scenery and I was pleased with the result, even though its my first Zander free session this year. No fishing for me for a couple of weeks now so time to explore and consider where to target next - Cheers Barrie Last edited by baitmaster; 10-08-2006 at 01:13 PM. |
