Zanders and bad back

Zanders and bad back at Sharpness canal

Well as you may know my backs been giving me hell lately so it was do or die day and with a little help with my kit it was time to see if I could find some zander.

Popping in to the tackle shop it was soon apparent that the canal had been fish well this weekend and one stretch was showing good bags of raoch and bream. So with a thankyou and some maggots and bits I made my way to Sharpness Canal.

The day was ment to be an over cast day with a bit of rain but NO it turned in to a bright sunny summers day !!

With hopes a bit dashed I thought that as I was here I would give it a go any how even though zanders are a bit put off by bright days

So chose my pag ( the nearest and flattest so I could lie down ) and set about catching some bait fish.

Guess what --- I found it very hard to get anything under a pound or over an ounce. Bagged up on lots of nice chub / perch and bream but all I needed were roach of about 4 inches which took me for ever . but hay the sport was good and if I was in a match would have gone 40lb

Finally got some fish and it was time to see if my new bite alarms were any good and pop some dead bait out on a ledger rig fished with a pop up ledger link and a live bait fishing inner shelve on a float with ledger stem system

Still being very bright I just thought what the hell its still worth a go and sure enought over the next three hour I had three zander . All very small being between 2 - 5lb but if your going zander fishing its a plus to catch what you are fishing for.

THey all came on the ledger rig which with the switch to my new system seemed to be a winning system for the sharpness canal

Then the night came and not a single twitch which was very strange indeed . The only thing I can think of is that I did up the bait size to 6 inch to try and get better zander

Any thoughts on why I got only small zanders and none any bigger would be great ,, but hay thats fishing

Now wheres my beer

Will hopefully take you up on that in the near future mate. I think Pingu may be up for it too. Not done any Zed fishing since I lived in Germany.

Re: Zanders and bad back

nice one richard you are hauling them zeds now

its not strange for zander to feed during the day but some time you will find as the season there feeding times will change but keep a note of feeding time as this can sometime pay dividends when time is tight to get out .

first it might be just that the area you are fishing has the small zander in it .as zanders get bigger they become less of a shoal fish and at around 9lb up wards they are more than likely be in ones and twos .
now when we been fishing and we get the schoolies we tend to fish a rod about 25 to 50 yards back behind where we are getting the smaller ones .
this can result in a bigger zander being caught.
as i believes the larger fish also tend to shadow the smaller zeds because when the small zeds hit into a shoal of roach killing some not all are eaten and a few that get attacked but not killed are normally pick up by the larger zeds as they do not have to put the effert into killing them .
example
on one occassion fishing with a mate two seasons back i had 6 zeds up to about 7lb to 8lb now he was a good 100yards further down and had not had a bite all evening and then he got one run and it went 15lb 2oz .

tightlines

Hi Richard,
well done with the Zander - normally I blank for weeks when I have a new bit of kit!
What did you think of the delkim Evo's? nice and sensitive?
That looks like a great location, with the tree and bushes lining the far bank -
