The River
Depth - upto 16 foot
Width - about 30 yrds
Flow - 1 - 2 MPH clear (summer) 1-4 MPH (winter)
Bank side - lots of over hanging trees plus clear reed stretches

So would I be best trouting my bait or should I nail the bait to the bottom ? IF on the bottom what would be the best set up as the flow on the water would make bite alarms a bit iffy

What baits would be the best ( roach ect in the water )

I will try and keep this very simple as there have been some very long replies.

If you are river fishing for Zander I suggest you try the following;

1...Fish short sessions as many as you can , like after work three nights per week , fish if you can just before it starts getting dark into complete darkness , I have noted z's feed mainly during darkness. This way you will very quickly work out what methods area's are the best on your river.

2...Try to keep as quiete as possible also try not to use very bright torches as z's are very spooky.

3...Do not used Pike tactics , scale down , use smaller hooks like 8's and do not use heavy resistance indicators / floats as Z's do not like resistance.

4...Try one rod on the bottom and one on float until you work out what method is the best , I have found out that on the bottom has worked better for me on average , it does however depend on the circumstance.

5...DO NOT USE sea baits , use natural , bait is the key to success , use your imagination.

You will catch Z's all year around , short sessions and frequently will be the key to success for you , again before its dark until complete darkness 3-5 hour sessions always did the biz for me , of course if you have bundles of time on your hands , fish all nighters..
