zander

i know this is the pike section but as they are a predator that zander should fall into this section being a member of the perch family and not a hybred as they are mistakenly called (pike perch) i would like to just put a few words down for you pike boys, given you a brief history of the species, they were introduce into the fen in 1963 when 97 little zeds were put in the relief channel at this time no one expected them to spread as they did first through out the fenland system and gradually spreading through out english waterways .there are many misconceptions about zander and most are wildly inaccurate. such as swimming around in large packs and killing whole shoals of fish just for fun. like all preds they kill to eat, they also were to blame for the rapid decline of the fenland fishing in the 70,s and 80,s they did have an effect but the reason for the decline was the use of pesticides and fertilisers which seaped into the drains leading to heavy weed growth .thanks to the hard work of n.fickling and dr barrie rickard zander now have some level of protection who tried to bring the true facts about zander to the angling public. the heart of zandering has been and all way will be the fen drains which cover a vast area and today there are still area that anglers have not fished . so an angler who wants to target this truely wild fish that have not been commercialised like other species can still do there own pioneering .i hope this has given you a bit of an insight into the world of the zander and that they now have there place in the predator circles and who knows they might soon break the 20lb barrier (hope its me who has the first one )

Re: zander

good question richard well the bait bit is easy i use baits of 4 inches in length if lives i like to 4 inch bream and roach but if deads i like roach best as far as tactics go leapfrogging to find possible hot spots once hots spots have been found the static tactics are employed which normaly consist of using three methods a fixed paternoster in the tight in the margins after dark
a simple ledger rig incorperating a fox ledger stem to keep resistence down and a ledger paternoster rig both the second rig i use dead baits on although in heavy flows they seemed to work better with lives on all rig i also make sure i have uptraces on and a snap link attachments for float fishing during the day i use 18inch traces with either size 8 or 10 trebles or if you prefer VB
double hooks on most venue i fish margins and shelve fish the best but on your local river you will have to do your homework and find out where they are coming out and best of luck and i hope you achieve your target and hope this is any help to ya

ps :here are other rigs and tactic that work well but i recommend the above for there effectiveness and simplicity

Re: zander

Great info there Baitmaster.

I have heard that Zander do like Lures especially the shad variety. Is this true?

Re: zander

yes is the easy answer shads (fox roach patterns )do work well so does jigs buzzers and worms although i myself have not done any lure fishing for zeds and i thank you for putting the idea into my mind i will have to now try and add a lure caught zed to my list ,but a good friend of mind loves to lure fish and he reckons you must keep very close to the botton and retreive very slowly and your lure should mimick as close to the food source as possible .the technique with spinner baits jigs is to fish them deep and slow dragging the bottom of course if there is bottom weed this will ruin this technique but if the bottom is clear you can imagine little puffs of dust being kicked up as the lure is bounced along back to the bank but like in pike fishing i suppose experimenting would be fun to so have a go with other lures plastics plugs etc who knows you might catch that fish of a life time who knows , i hope this has helped
