zander bait opions

hey all i was talking to my mate on the bank saturday evening and i asked him if he could only use one bait zander fishing what would it be and why?.. so im wondered if you guys could only take one zander bait with you to the bank what would it be and why?

mine personally would just be a bright lime green 10cm 15gram lime green soft minnow lure as ive had a few zander on it n i prfer lures at the mo
but if i was going down the bait route it would have tobe bleak having took both of my doubles in it and 3 smaller zeds to 7lb on it i have every faith in it!
look forward to your replys

Re: zander bait opions

Hi Jay

It you be good to breakdown the coarse baits into individual species to get a true picture on what anglers rate as their no1

A poll was done on another forum last year, I was surprised that the bait I chose came out as number 1...dead Rudd, and I was not the only one voting lol

My top baits (all dead baits) in order are

Rudd
Trout
Roach
Small Skimmer Bream
Eel section
Bleak

Recently I fished an area with a live Roach on one rod and another rod baited with dead Rudd. I caught a couple of Zander on the dead Rudd, including an 11lb fish, but I did not have a run on the live bait, even though the rods were only a couple of mtrs apart from each other.

The time of day, weather conditions, water temp and clarity will always play a big part in bait selection.

Darrell

Re: zander bait opions

I only use course fish, I've never used Lamprey or Eel (It's illegal to remove eels from waters in England and Wales - EA ruling)

The reason I use course fish is because I keep a freezer stock of fish caught during the Summer/Autumn from the Severn (I'm totally law abiding you see some say too tight to buy them )

I've no real preference over the following, Bleak (the Lower Severn Bleak are monsters) Dace, Chub, Roach, Gudgeon. I really dont like Bream though, even for Pike fishing - they're just too wide but if forced to use them through availability I'll 'slice' the back off to make them a better shape

The full legal stuff regarding fish removal is HERE for anyone who wants to know.

Re: zander bait opions

cheers darrell for the reply, it's intrestting to know about differnt anglers preferance :)

and regarding the ilegal moving of eels and lamprey mine are brought blast frozen from a tackle shop so i break no laws regarding roach and bleak i love using then for zander as there my favorate by far, if im not lure fishing but 90% of my bait is brought from the tackle shop

Re: zander bait opions

No suggestion you were mate, I know that Lucebait still sell them (must be imported). My post was purely informative. I though it worth pointing out for any on lookers. It's amazing the number of people who don't know about the protection eels have right now.

Re: zander bait opions

Just tried to vote for the fresh water selection but the poll states it is closed....

For me, any fresh water deadbait will be my first line of attack for Zander, although I've caught plenty of them on lives, I too have found that they can be easily ignored in favour of a freshly decapitated deadbait - even when fished in close proximity? Is the Zander primarily a scavenger and not an out and out predator???

Mine too Paul, currently small Chub or Roach. However I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve been 'conditioned' into using coarse fish over sea bait. There are the odd posts about on the net of sea bait being quite successful.

I’m currently catching no problem on baits that are far from fresh (in and out of the freezer lots of times – well I’m a bit short right now) so I don’t see why a smelly sea bait should get the same positive attention. It’s worth a try sometime. (Especially on a cost and availability point – What fish would be best ?)

I’ve still to give Trout a go, and now I know the right way to prepare it (thanks Darrell) there’ll be a fillet or two of this heading for the murky depths of the G&S canal in the not too distant.

One other bait thought

Pike eat Pike, Perch eat Perch, Zander eat ………………..!!

Paul – You able to make the meet? Be good to see you mate

Re: zander bait opions

Here is a spanner in the works!!

After 3 of pike fishing on the canal in Exeter I have caught all my pike on either blueys or lampray and makkie. Tried all manor of course bait and never caught.
