Cold But Worth It 2

I was driving home late Friday morning through the rain and snow and thought that with the dire weather and forecast for the rest of the day and evening, I would forget about fishing and go out for a meal with the wife. I phoned her and found out that one of her mad mates was coming around for the evening, So I decided to grabbed my gear, bait and food and head off to the River Ouse and fish were I had caught some Zander on Wednesday.

Luckily when I arrived around 2pm the snow etc...had stopped, but there was a strong cold breeze blowing downstream and slightly across the river.

I quickly erected my shelter before I set up the three rods. The left rod was cast out 1/4 of the way across the river with a Roach dead bait. The middle rod fished halfway, baited with dead Rudd and the third rod 3/4 of the way across, again baited with dead Rudd.

I had just completed putting the wrap-over over the shelter and getting the bed, cooker etc... in place when there was a couple of bleeps from the left hand rods indicator, a very slow bite was met with a swift strike and the first fish of the day was on. result was a small Zander of around 4lb.

Ten minutes after re-casting the same rod indicated another run, this time a 7lb Zander was landed, a good start to the day.

A couple of hours or so had past when the left rod indicated a run, but the bait was dropped before I could strike , but I did not have to wait long for more action as the middle rod had a gentle take, following a good fight another Zander of around 7 lb was netted.

I then suffered a frustrating 45 minute period where I had six runs, but only hooking one Zander, a fish around the 7lb mark.

Just after 8pm I hooked a decent fish on the middle rod, I was well happy, result was a Zander of 10.12lb

It was followed twenty minutes later by a another Zander around the 4lb mark

There was a bit of a lull in action until just after midnight when the left hand rod signalled a fish, after another good fight a 8lb Zander was landed. Just as I was re baiting the left hand rod, the right hand rod had a slow take, I quickly struck and knew straight away that it was a decent fish. I prayed it was not a Pike, and was over the moon when a large Zander broke the surface, a cracking Zander bang on 13lb

As I was putting the big girl back I slipped and got a boot full of water, not an ideal thing to do as everything was freezing up. Luckily I had a spare pair of sock.

Just as I completed changing my socks the left hand rod screamed off again. The way the line peeled from the reel before I struck, I was expecting a decent fish, only to land the smallest and last Zander of the session. The Zander may have just made 3lb.

I had no more action until 6am when I had a dropped run.

All in all a good session except for the freezing temperatures and a wet foot.

I need to thank my wife for inviting her mad mate around.

Sorry if I have rambled on a bit

Darrell

Bloody hell Darren - you can do no wrong right now mate. Well done, and a nice report. There must be a large head of bait fish in the area with all these Zeds around.

Thumbs up Re: Cold But Worth It 2

Great bag of Zeds mate. Hopefully you can bring some of that luck along to the next Sharpness canal meet. Looks like it will be in February.

Thanks Steve

The bait fish are further upstream in the town section, an area that I will not fish, especially at night.

As I was getting a few runs, then a lull, then a few more runs, I believe that the Zander are passing through my swim going towards the town section.

I have fished this area around this time of the year before with some decent success and some blanks!!
