Old West River

Hi anybody know about fishing this river? I had a go last week by the bridge that crosses the river as you head towards Stretham, but the water seemed very shallow (barely 5 ft) and i struggled to find deeper water which is where i would guess the silver fish would shoal. I'm told that this is a good 'beginners' water? I have also heard that the Lazy Otter and Fish and Duck stretches are good but not sure if they fish better at particular times of the year?

Any advice would be much appreciated,
