New to zander in Glos area

After fishing all my life one of the few species i have not fished for is zander and i have been wanting to target these for some while now. I fished my first session last week on the canal near Hardwicke near the turning basin and had one dropped run. I really could do with some help in where are the most produtive areas, is it the canal or the Severn itself? Also what baits, rigs work best.
I'm not after your hot-spots just general areas and am more than willing to put in a lot of hard work myself to bank one of these amazing fish.
I would be very grateful for any help given.
