Hooks Having hooked twelve Zander and losing four on Friday night due to the hooks pulling I was wonder weather I need to look at my hook choice or was it just one of those nights? At the moment I use semi barbed treble hooks, I dont want to use barbed hooks, I am thinking maybe it is the hook pattern that I need to look at or accept that it was one of those nights Any thoughts Darrell

Re: Hooks Thats not a bad hook up ratio in my book mate. You could of just missed schoolie Zeds on those four takes but 8 fish is a belting session and I am often guilty of striking into fresh air, but rather that than deep hooking. I tend to find takes a bit more finicky on deads but in my own fishing with both lives/deads ive found deads sort out the better fish. Hook wise its partridge size 8 in doubles these days although I may move up to size 6 in future.

Re: Hooks Hi mate The four I lost, one was only around the three pound mark, came off at the net, Another was a large fish hooked on the far bank, came off after a minute of playing her across the river. The third I connected with but lost almost straight away, the last was a fish around 8-9lb, lost a few yards from the bank, that's why I am gutted. I used both deads and lives, but I do prefer dead baits, like you said it does seem to sort out the better Zeds I did try the Partridge doubles last season, but after a couple of missed runs I gave up on them. Maybe I did not give them a decent try. I still have them so will try them out this Friday Darrell

Re: Hooks Yup I was exactly the same with the double hooks mate, at first I was just using one alongside a treble and this was the upper hook that would go in the tail root of the bait. I dont know why, but these hold brilliantly in the bait. I know its a confidence thing and Im just the same with trace wire and certain rigs.

Re: Hooks damn headless thats a good trip, it may be just down to poor hook hold or very shy takes with the baits, however judging by the amount landed i would say not to worry about it your doing something right...... real good trip mate hope it continues for you

It was interesting to watch a Zander fight in the clear water, the first two Zeds I had came i day light. One was around seven pounds and the way it fought with its mouth open and shaking its head for most of the fight it is not surprising that the hooks are thrown. I will be trying the double hooks as mentioned by Zanderandy, you never now it may have added a couple more Zeds to my total. Zanderandy also states it is a confidence thing which I totally agree with, time will tell Darrell |

Re: Hooks the zed we had from the sharpness on the weekend was on the partridge doubles in an 8, the only thing im not sure of on them is they do seem a bit thin and bendy.

Re: Hooks Hi Cookie, the Partridge doubles seem a bit that way to look at but there as tough as boots. The reasons I like them are twofold with the ease of unhooking especially during darkness and the way the hook seems to grip the tail root better than most trebles ive come across. Regards Andy
