| Whats the best lenght for wire traces whilst zandering ? Or does it depend on conditions ? Im wondering this as have never actually tied different lenghts . So would a 3 foot wire trace be better if takes are shy or would a 18 inch one be better ? Whats your thoughts guys ? ![]() __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander Rich, I always make mine long enough so there's no chance of getting bitten off by a Pike - about 18" minimum in old money. I can't see any advantage in going longer Steve |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander I make mine 24", I find it results in more hook ups. I always set up my shelter etc... tight to the rods and strike straight away. 9 times out of ten the Zeds are lightly hooked Darrell |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander nice one the reason why i asked this question is when ledgering you very you hook lenght to conditions so was wondering if anyone has actually done any work on this ? ie tried 4 foot traces ect ? its food for thought or am i just going a bit nutty __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander Thinking about this a bit more - If you are using a run-ring ledger rig, the longer your trace, the further the lead will be from the bait. This has to result in less/slower indication of a take, and increase the risk of deep hooking. A definite no no IMO. Steve |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander Im going lure fishing on a local canal sunday looking for pike and perch, my biggest traces are only 10" is this adequate enoughI was thinking the fish wouldnt get chance to bite past the trace as itl be an instant strike, am I right ? | Re: wire trace lenght zander I wouldn't use anything shorter than 10" for lure work, just in case. If you have any less than this I'd throw them away. You'd never forgive yourself if you lost a fish of a lifetime just because you used a short one and got bitten off. Good luck BTW I'm out tomorrow to see if there's a Zed or two about. Daylight hours only unfortunately Steve |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander Hi, fishing now, four zander, all caught on dead baits with a 24inch trace. Three of the zeds only had one of the trebles in the mouth, the other was on a hair rigged single hook rig, again lightly hooked. I have my indicators set sensitive so as soon as the zeds pick the bait up I know. With striking straight away there is little risk. Over the last two years I have experimented with various lengths of trace and have settled on using 24 inch lenghts, touch wood I have never deep hooked a zander. I have found if I miss loads of runs during day light hours, instead of altering the lengths of trace I switch onto a medium quiver tipped rod and fish it as though I was Bream fishing. I have hooked most bites (fished with a single hook) good sport as well. Darrell |

| Re: wire trace lenght zander Try it with a weight that you can mould some ground bait around, if you have plenty if dead baits, scrape the scales off and add to the ground bait. When it hits the water/bottom the scales fall and lay scattered, I am sure it has helped me when it was tough going. Letting out all my secrets now lol Darrell |
