Where have all the zander gone!!!!

Fishing the Gloucester canal and have noticed that the zander have gone very quiet almost as if they have moved out of the normal holding spots.
Has anybody had any luck fishing for them in the last few weeks on this water.

Re: Where have all the zander gone!!!!

Tried a few week ago and it was dead but the canal was murky and I find that seems to kill them off the feed and also its been very mild.

They have to feed sometime, so will just have to keep trying and sooner or later they will show up just hope it's sooner.
This cold snap we are having should get something going!

Re: Where have all the zander gone!!!!

The Grand Union around Warwick, is also quiet for zander, we have tried a couple of day sessions during oct, when it wasnt too cold. I had some sand eel left over from a holiday in cornwall, thought i'd give them a go on the canal, No zander, but an 11lb Pike ! . My first as well on the stretch, Maybe due to its presence, the zander have gone.
Merry Christmas

Myself and a friend have been fishing the grand union the last couple of nights with deads and had a go today with lures at Hatton locks - not even a single run from all three trips? No idea what were doing wrong putting it down to the cold any advice apriciated! Thanks in advance

Re: Where have all the zander gone!!!!

Hi guys

Thats pretty harsh , 3 trips and not even a single Run, We havnt been fishing since our last thread, so can only guess, it to be this cold spell we've had, if this is any use, have you tried small sprats , trotting them down on a chub float ? From experience you should get a few runs, even tho you will miss 2 out of 3 due to small zander attacks. Other then that i'd wait til the water temperature warms up to a consistant, and we stop getting these really cold nights. Think an average night time temp of around o degrees. would stop most fish feeding, except the pike

Good Luck

Re: Where have all the zander gone!!!!

Zander are notorious fickle creatures, especially if you fish for them with lures; also they are great travellers. A tagging study in Europe showed that zander can travel 300 kilometers in a few days, stay in spot for another couple of days, and then return 300 kilometers back to where they started from. And then you ask where have they gone!
