Lure fishing for zander on canals? Hi. I'm new to this (as you can probably tell). Is this an insane question? Are there zander on the Grand Union Canal (around Braunston) and if so can they be fished with lures? If so, how/when/what is the best way to go about it? On the same subject - any chance of Pike in similar waters? Any help welcome ![]()

Re: Lure fishing for zander on canals? Hi, I know there are Zeds in the Grand Union but not sure about best areas. Again Im not the best lure fisherman, but for Zander your best trying 4 to 6 inch shads, grubs and spinnerbaits. Anything fished bumping the deck is the best way as thats where the Zeds will be. Best of luck Andy

Re: Lure fishing for zander on canals? The Duke of Bedford arranged several isolated shipments in the late 18th century, but it really wasnt until an experiment to introduce 100 Zander into the Great Ouse Relief Channel that the species took off. They rapidly spread through the Fens and from there were illegally and legally introduced to other waters. The Relief Channel fish are said to be from Germany.

Re: Lure fishing for zander on canals? Interesting fishing history! Trying zanders on canals is really common. It's probably the best place to do that by the way. Fish changing of place regularly until you find them (they usually live in banks, at least until a certain age). About the lures... there exists an infinity of them... The soft lures: from the classic curly tail from Mepps to the latest creatures, passing by the impregnated ones, the weighted soft jerkbaits, worms, tail worms etc. Size may be from 8 to 15 cm. Colors: a catch-all colors could be the white (or pearl white), but for the zander there is really no rule! A lure I have to try is the jig, as for the pike it was a really success, there is no reason it does not work with the zander. How to rig? => jighead, texas-rigged, carolina-rigged, jig... There is a special technique, really really deadly for the zander in France, that we call the Cochard weight ("plomb palette"). Look at this page for details, it will convince you! http://peche-tergnier.fr/plombpalette.php Apart of the soft lures, I know people who use the mid-waters and deep waters hard baits, like the X-rap serie. Myself I really have no success this way (it's strange, because I use to catch many pikes and perches!!!), but many people use them. Have FUN!!! __________________ Vous n'avez jamais vu l'aube.[...] Seul le pêcheur sait le gout exact du matin, le goût du pain et celui du café de l'aurore. Les pieds dans l'eau (R. Fallet)

| Re: Lure fishing for zander on canals? OH!!! And how can I have forgotten one of the best lures??? the spoon! The light spoons (Syclops Lite, S, light Inkoos, light Orkla and Orlac etc) and the more weighty ones (classic Syclops, classic Inkoos, Orkla, Orlac etc) are the perfect lure also. The good thing is that if you mount them properly, you will never loose them so it's a really cheap technique. __________________ Vous n'avez jamais vu l'aube.[...] Seul le pêcheur sait le gout exact du matin, le goût du pain et celui du café de l'aurore. | Re: Lure fishing for zander on canals? As canals are fairly shallow I wouldn't discount using crank-baits especially in the warmer months. Zander will feed near surface when the weather is warmer. I've done well with Mann's Baby One Minus crank-baits catching my best zander of 7lb 2oz on this bait. One of fishing partners has also caught his best zander using this lure. ![]() |
