Bristol channel flatties

As a kid I used to catch some lovely flounders in the river ely. We used to fish from some old delelict buildings which were part of the old penarth dock site. Nobody seems to target them any more. Is that because there are none here any more. I cant believe that with all this mud at our disposal. I`d be interested to here from anyone who fishes for flatfish of any description around Penarth, Cardiff, Barry. Are there any marks worth targetting? Boats or shore.

Re: Bristol channel flatties

The inner Harbour at Penarth produces some good Flounder from the shore. There are a few marks off the boat, for flounder and ocasionally Dover Sole.Try the mud patches off the foreshore for the flounders...

Is this the right time of year for flounder / sole etc now?
What bait should I try?

Re: Bristol channel flatties

Right time for Flounder, a bit early for the Sole.

Re: Bristol channel flatties

Cheers....Bait? I guess freshly dug local ragworm. What about attractor beads and such like? are they really as good as some people claim?

Re: Bristol channel flatties

Smallish hooks, size 1 or 1/0,Attractor spoon and small bead "catapillars" are worth using ,obviuosly not because of the visual aspect ,but they do generate vibrations .Worm baits are tops, peeler is good if you can get any.

HAve heard that St Marys Well Bay produces some good sole up to a couple of pounds too.
