| Sunday off Penarth. Took the 12.00 lock out of Penarth on Sunday deciding to fish the last of the ebb and then 3-4 hours of the flood. Motored for about 10 minutes and dropped anchor at a mark off the Rannie that has done well for me this season. I couldnt get any worm as it was all booked but I did manage to get half a dozen peelers. Then I called into Morrisons on my way home from work on Friday and bought a bag of cooked, frozen king prawns and a bag of mussels....yes mussels. I thought i`d try stuffing squid bodies with this under- rated bait, tying it up with thread and lashing it on (always looking for cheaper alternatives to worm). Turns out it wasnt that successful but then again nothing took squid all day anyway in any combination. What worked well though was the cocktail of prawns and peeler crab. A cod just about every cast proved that. That was what I baited my uptider with. The downtider was predominantly squid/mackerel, mussel, and didnt catch a thing on it all day. Uptiding brought about a dozen fish (I lost count after a while). Many were under a pound but I kept four which were in the 3-3.5 lb bracket. I even had two on one trace at one time. A small codling took the lower pennel hook and one about 3.5lb took the top pennel. Unfortunately the bigger one escaped to the depths before I could get the net under it. What I did also notice about all of these fish was how healthy and lively they were. One fish actually swam right round the stern of the boat from port to starboard just under the surface....a really fantastic sight. It appears I did better than most too. Most of the boats dissappeared down channel with the hope of picking up a lunker or two. Some had the odd 4.5lber but most had to settle for rays and strap conger. Its about time I turned the tables on them as its usually me thats envious back in the lock.....What a brilliant day, and the weather was lush too. Another day off on Friday....bring it on. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |

| Re: Sunday off Penarth. Well done mate, sounds like a cracking session. Cooked prawn you say? I thought it had to be un cooked to be any good? Maybe it's time for a trip to Tescos then!Good report mate. __________________ Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. | Re: Sunday off Penarth. Suprised me too Rich. My cousin came out with me a couple of weeks ago. I was using uncooked king tiger prawns and he was using cooked king prawn. He caught two codling and I blanked.....just goes to show. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |
