| Sunday 14th Jan Evenutally got out on Sunday in between all the windy weather ! Got to the locks for 8. 00am to be greeted by a right large amount of boats so eventually forced to have the 8. 30am lock - filed into the locks with another 10 boats and a good bit of banter and off out to sea for the much anticipated cod .......... Nearly all boats steamed off to fish by the ranny whilst a handful of us fished the North Buoy - stayed there for an hour and half and only had a handful of bites ending with 2 codling on one trace - they were very small cod though. Moved a bit further inside the buoy and ended up fishing some corally ground although quite flat. Chucked the biats out with little hope of catching before we were due back in at 1. 15pm. Well a decent hours fishing followed - one thornie to just over 10lb put up a great scrap, one conger to 6lb, two whiting and the old man having missed four good bites ended up with the all important cod - just over 3lb and home for tea to keep the old dear quiet !!!! One thing I wanted to know - are the rays in spawning season now because the one we had was very fat underneath and so we treated her with a great deal of tenderness and care before releasing her to swim off like a goodun...... All in all not too bad and I noticed a good little spot where about 4 locals fished on the flood so next time eh ![]() Quite uncomfortable seas that day and several boats in the lock coming in hadnt had much success off the ranny so maybe we werent so stupid after all trying a little closer inshore. __________________ So near yet so far - Wembley 2008 - Zideered Right Up ! |

| Re: Sunday 14th Jan Quote:
Untill 8 (ish) years ago the Cardiff mud flats,River Taff and River Ely, the entrance to both Penarth and Cardiff docks, were all tidal. As the regeneration of what in now known as Cardiff Bay wet ahead a barrage was built from Penarth Head to just behind the Cardiff Dock entrance. This created a huge fresh water lake, enclosing the rivers and Penarth Marina. What was tidal is now permanently fresh. So as a concequence there are 3 huge locks to allow access into the Bristol Channel.4 locks per hour,2 out and 2 in.You can launch from many of the yacht clubs in the bay,and Penarth marina 24 hour access is great as before it used to be tidal. The Barrage locks..........Inside the locks take 6-10 in one lock ![]() ![]() __________________ Mike.. | Re: Sunday 14th Jan nice report Tommy, unlucky on the Cod front though, talking to a couple of people and they didn't do to well either, looks like the tide wasn't running fast enough to bring them on. The rays we had last week were in the same condition, should be spawning soon now. looks like we didn't miss much but bet you were glad to be out. |

| Re: Sunday 14th Jan Thanks for that mate - you are right the cod were a bit light on the ground and after an hour or so the north buoy was empty of boats ! Thanks for answering the question on the rays - I thought it looked ready to produce a few more so thats great news. How do you tell between a male and female though ? Hoping to get out next week if the weather is any good and the freeze is heading our way - cod all round then !!! __________________ So near yet so far - Wembley 2008 - Zideered Right Up ! |
