Cardiff Bay Cod Comp Nov 19th

We got off to an indifferent start to the day, with one of our anglers stumbling into the marina in the dark, bringing his day to a cold and wet conclusion, before even getting aboard ....Luckily he was fished out to cast another day.

We locked out in fairly calm and sunny condtions, with the weather looking as if it was going to turn nasty late in the day.Fishing was slow, but we were concentrating on finding the "biggie" that would win the comp.

Baits for the day large worm, suid and crab coctails, fished uptide on flowing pennel rigs.

Fishing the same mark that produced 3 good doubles last weekend,a few fish came aboard, but it was hard work for all onboard.A fewhours in and Danny hooked into what looked to be a good fish, several minutes later our first "double was in the net........weighing over 10lb,eventually turnig the scales some 6 hours later at 9lb 12oz.

A couple of smaller cod followed, but as the day progressed the wind started to pick up,so we decided to move inshore for the last hour.Chris Fry was soon into a fish, whuch turned the scales at 10lb 9oz`s,which was soon followed by a good 7 lb fish again to Chris..

2 happy chaps

Re: Cardiff Bay Cod Comp Nov 19th

Cardiff Bay Cod Comp - Thanks Mike and Dan for a great days fishing.Heres my little addon.

Well the day had came and with the winds dropping over night it was not long before I was parked up in Penarth Marina getting my gear on for the days Cod fishing

On arriving at the boat there was a bit of a commotion going on as one of the lads had slipped in the dark and gone into the marina. Luckily he got help from fellow anglers but was very shaken. Which is a bit of a reminder that flotation suits do work and NEVER strap tackle boxes / rucksacks to your back if you are on slippy rocks or marina walk , as you may never get them off in time before the shock / cold gets you.

Away we steamed to get our tickets along with a good turn out of fellow anglers and then with a bit of fun at the locks we were out and going to our mark. Must admit Ive never seen so many boats in the bristol channel and it was great to see so much interest in the cod comp

Baits
Lug / Rag worm
Squid
Crab
Prawn
Fished on uptider rods with 8oz grip leads

I was fishing between Mike and Andy of which proved to be a prim position for the micky take of which flowed all day but unfortunately was not lucky on the fishing as I only managed one tiny whiting. ( Note to self - fish next to them again )

We all fished hard with upto 10 worms fished on a pennell rig rebaiting every 10 - 20mins but the cod were not in the mood and with the continuous phoning other boats we soon found out that everyone was really finding it hard to find the cod.

But Dan and Chris managed to produce the goods on the day so well done both of you coming 3rd and 4th and meaning that Lady Helen had two of the top four fish on the day which in is amazing.

A quick pint in the club to see some of the fish that had come in , was a very nice warmer and it was a bit of a shame that so little numbers of anglers who took part did not do the same after all the effort by the organisers plus skippers had put in.

So well done Lady Helen on scooping two of the top places!!!

Cool Re: Cardiff Bay Cod Comp Nov 19th

Hello All
I also went out for the comp. Weather had looked dodgy all week but it seemed ok for a few hours early on so Myself plus two fished. We were fishing almost alone around the mid Cardiff and as the tide flow decreased we started hitting fish catching four cod in about an hour. All were relatively small but enough for tea. Unfortunately for us as the fishing picked up so did the weather and we had to move inshore and away from the fish. We were back through the lock by 1400 with nothing big enough to weigh in and a very sick crew member (no names).
We were dissapointed to have to leave what was looking like a very promising spot as we felt it was only a matter of time before we caught something bigger but overall we enjoyed ourselves and thats what counts I suppose. Well done Lady Helen. I'll have you next year.
