Double Figure Cod on Lady Helen

Venue
Penarth on board Lady Helen South Wales

Tackle
Uptiders and down tiding fished with 0/4 hooks fished on a pennel rig

Bait
Rag / Lug and squid (you need at least 1-2lb of worm to fish for cod properly)
(fished 5 to 8 worms on the pennel rig tipped with squid stripes on both hooks)

Well, the morning had come and being a bit of an eager beaver I had arrived at the Penarth marina a bit early, which was fine as it gave me sometime to have a coffee.

Not log after this it was time to say my hello's and make our way out of the lock to go and hunt some Cod!!! The cod come into the channel to feed on sprats and shrimp.

Here is a shrimp that jumped on my hook !!

Now knowing the week had been hard for all boats my hopes were not high and was thinking that at least it was a day out.

So with a shortish steam the anchor was set it was time to load up the pennal rigs with worms and cast. The great thing about boat fishing is you can learn so much by looking at other anglers rigs and how they use them ect.

Unfortunately Andy (Penarth Dogfish Campaign) was not one of these on the day .... First cast the line parted and it was time to re rig ... But at least his strop was of a high standard (hehe )

The tide was only about a 9 so with our baits out the wait started but within 10 mins the rods started to nod .... Fish on !! and my thought turned to "Bloody hell Mike and Dan have done it again"

Through out the uptide the fish came aboard from whiting of which were very small and if you left them down there the conger were hitting them hard and of course dogfish

But what about the Cod ?

Well, what a day for Doubles!!

Mike was the first with this cracking Cod of 10lb and was more than a happy bunny getting it on board.

Then it was my turn with this nice 16lb Cod

Great two double Cod in one trip what more could we ask for but then another cracking 12lb feel of which was the first time he had caught a cod and what a way to break your cherry!!!

with everyone one on the boat landing a fish the mood was high and with THREE DOUBLE COD landed as well we new this was a bit of a rare day.

The downtide was much harder with the wind picking up and the fishing dropping off. It was a great day, meeting some new friend, lashings of the p--s take and some lovely fish thrown in for good measure.

THanks to Mike and Dan of the Lady Helen for once again doing the work and putting us on a mark that if fished correctly produced the fish.

So great day fishing with mates , what more can one say

Out next sunday with Lady Helen for the cod championship and if I had the cod then would have well been in the running for the £1000 prize --- nuts has all my lucky been used up and a blank session on the cards
