29/10/06 Cardiff

What a load of boats out there. I was queuing for the 7am lock this morning. When I got out there it was chaos. Boats everywhere. You could tell the wind had dropped for the first time ina long while. It didnt last though. No sooner had I dropped anchor beyond the `North Cardiff`, so the dreaded wind got up from the North. It wasnt too bad though, a bit lumpy in a small boat, rocking from side to side and hardly any current to hold the boat the way it was supposed to lay on the flood tide. Stuck it till about an hour before the turn. All I was catching were the obligatory dogfish and strap conger. I had two rods out and caught at least a dog or a conger on every cast. I decided to move in shore to the Rannie bay to see if any codling were running past in the rip across the spit. Still very lumpy, dropped anchor quite close to shore. The Penarth open comp was on the beach. If anyone had cracked off on a cast it would have gone straight through my hull. I was about 300 yds from the beach. Still catching strap conger then to my delight my first codling of the season. Only about 2lb and not long after Plugger had landed a nice thornie a little further out. A good start though and followed by another after Pete and his crew had given up for the day. As soon as I was back on the slipway the wind dropped right off.......Sods Law. Nice Day but bring on the frosts.....Time for a few beers now.
