Yaeh just rag and squid mate. They were cracking rag from Aspinals in Barry. He never uses the farmed stuff so you can guarantee good worms from him. I pulled off the squid head and kept it to one side in case I ran out later. Sliced the body lengthways into 4. Hooked it through 2 or 3 times followed by a rag then same again with squid then a rag then tipped off with squid. Quite a big bait but it seemed to work. The bass took one of the squid heads that I had "kept for later".

Got the 1.30 lock and headed for Sully Island. Light S Easterly (10mph) low tide at 3.45.(12.8 m). Dropped anchor and Mike was straight into a whiting followed by a strap conger. The congers continued for the next 2 hours or so. Then I lifted into a bite and thought I was snagged until I realised it a coming in. It started stripping line off my reel at will. When it surfaced,it was the biggest conger I had caught by a long way. Its head looked like a well polished rock with eyes that wanted to kill. Mike took the photo`s.. I reached to grab the trace so I could weigh it. As I did, the thing went into reverse. I felt the line tighten on my glove and it starightened my 4.O Kamasan hook like it was made of playdough..
Next we went to St Marys Well Bay to see if the cod had arived there. First drop was a small codling (I got that one right) then back into the strappers. Left then for the Rannie Bay. Dropped anchor about 300 yds from shore in hardly any current. Pouting started to show along with more small conger. Decided on a last cast now that the rag had gone. I had some rag on my hook from the previous cast and added a squid head hooked through the eyes. After about 10 mins my rod took a dive. After lifting into it and clearing the bottom, it started to go under the boat. I had a feeling this wasnt another conger. I was right. It was the biggest Bass I have seen. It must have been in double figures. By the time Mike got the net it seemed to arch it back and made a beeline for the murkey depths.....without my hook. Another tale of the one that got away???....ask Mike, he saw it too.
Finally got the 7.15 lock. What a day. about 15 Congers, Whiting, pout, and codling. And a massive conger and Bass that didnt quite make the boat.
I think I`ve got the hang of it now. thanks everyone for your help
