Penarth Monday.

Blowing a howling southerly. typical for my day off. So a bit limited as to where I could fish. Went out about midday and stayed around the penarth area. I shouldnt really have gone out but It was my day off and i`d been looking forward to it. When I looked at the 5 day forecast 5 days ago it said North easterly 9mph. What a load of utter tosh and twaddle. It was a good 25mph southerly out there and strengthening all the time I was out.
Anyway fished out beyond the Mid Cardiff marker. First 2 casts were the inevitable dogfish, 3rd was a tope about 2lb and 4th cast a thornie about the size of a dinner plate. All small stuff but what a species haul in the first hour.. Then the waves started chucking me about a bit much and decided to play safe and go inshore a bit. Motored in to the rannie bay where it was even worse. Didnt even drop anchor. Went off to the sewer buoy over by the Rhumney river mouth. Took it easy as I was planing with the wind and tide behind me. Dropped anchor there for about half an hour, stuck my head up above my windscreen and nearly got it blown off. At which point I chickened out, reeled in, up anchored and managed to get the 4.15 lock back in. Managed to avoid a soaking coming back against the wind. At one point though, I was doing about 6 knots on my GPS but when I took a bearing on a fixed mark, I hadnt actually moved anywhere for about the last 10 minutes. Took it up to 8 knots and started to make progress. I couldnt give it any more because my bow was already close to "digging in". Still, a good day, not too scary this time, and another first for me....the tope pup.

Well done Andy. You don't half get up to some scary stuff in that boat mate eh? For god's sake, don't tell the life insurance people.... They'll have a field day!

Re: Penarth Monday.

its certainly not for the faint hearted out there. I think bonkers is the term Claudia. I`m certainly not a superman. I doubt if Superman kacks himself when he hits a bit of rough stuff.
The bigger boat will come in time but I have to persevere with this one for now. Quite adventurous though and I really am enjoying it. You guys with the boats have been doing it for years probably and are well used to the conditions out there. I`ve only been boating since last November so still learning, and obviously very naive. We learn from our mistakes though....(If we live to fight another day that is). Maybe I should stick to the beach.

Re: Penarth Monday.

hi andy,
well done on the tope. now what you mean about the conditions as our last few trips have been a bit scary.if the forecasters would only get it a little bit right sometimes it might help a bit.anyway it beats sitting at home on weekends.
