If you are fishing over clean ground, and expect to catch smallish fish, such as flounders, dabs, pout, whiting etc then use two or three hook flappers with smallish baits, usually with size 2 to 1o hooks... If, on the other hand, you're over rough ground, and after cod, bass, conger etc, then use rotten bottom rigs, where you're more likely to lose just the lead and not the fish. You can fish rotten bottom style with pennels too, use biggish baits on biggish strong hooks. Also, if you're fishing a very weedy or kelpy venue, I would advise not to pennel. Use a rotten bottom but only a single hook. More often than enough, it's the hooks that get caught in the weed.... |
