| Tuesday 30th may Took yet another day off work only to find the wind had turned to the north and increased in strength. I motored out to Flat Holme to see if there were any sheltered spots out of the wind and current. Well there were areas out of the wind but in 110 ft of water and I only carry 90ft of warp. I made my way down to Fontygary area dropped anchor there for about an hour. Had a doggie every cast and nothing else. The wind got too strong then (it was about as rough as in the Charter Skippers photos and far too rough for my little boat). Made my way back towards Sully Island and tucked in near the causeway. Had another couple of doggies but no Bass unfortunately. Passed the Chara who was fishing in Sully Bay then she steamed past me while I was at anchor holding up a conger that was as tall as the bloke who was holding it up. Massive. Went out to the Mid Cardiff and back to the Ranny before giving up cursing my bad luck again. About 10 dogs in all. I took my camera too but I couldnt stand up long enough to take pictures without holding on to something. I dropped my crab/shrimp net down while I was fishing slack water off Sully Island with some mackie heads in it. Didnt get any crabs but lots of little shrimps. Used them for bait when I tucked in by the causeway for Bass but not to be this time. One of the doggies I caught down channel regurgitated an edible softie which must have been about three inches long. Used that for bait too but hey..the fish had other things to do obviously. Still we`ve all seen doggies before. Weathers looking good for the weekend though. Might see if I can join the flotilla of boats that will be heading for aberthaw. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |

| Re: Tuesday 30th may Havnt heard any reports of Bass actually being caught but I was talking to a chap in the lock who had just come back from the `middle grounds`. He didnt have any Bass but this time last year he was notching up some double figure blighters from there on rag and crab. Your right Pete, although I only caught doggies the other day, it was a day off whilst most others were working. I dont think i`ll get out this weekend. I`ve been re-fuelling my boat after tuesdays epic "around flat holme, down to castle rock and back" trip. Looks like it will be 25 quid by the time its full again (5 galls). Wont be doing that again in a hurry. On top of that was 6 quid launch fee and a tenner on bait.....geeeees thats 40 quid....almost a fiver a doggie. The missus wants me to paint the fence and other menial stuff. I suppose I should oblige and hope she doesnt find out about the 40 quid. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |

| Re: Tuesday 30th may Quote:
I went through the lock at 10 o`clock and was out by Flat Holme about 20 past. Went quite slow at one point because there was some very rough water out there. I did quite a bit of manouvering out there looking for places to fish and probably spent about 20 mins doing that. From there I went to fontygary and I was fishing by about 11,30. Again I did a lot of zig zagging looking for reefs and gullies. On the way back I was planing a lot so I was up and down on the throttle. Again when I got to Sully Island I did a lot of hopping around looking for ground to fish. I can understand where the fuel went even though its only a 25hp 2 stroke engine. I did a fair few miles in all considering the wind and tide taking me off course all the time too. The wind plays a major part in the fuel consumption on my small boat as you can imagine. Maybe I should choose my days a bit more carefully. By the way, I wasnt moaning about it. It just took me by suprise a bit. I`m still on a massive learning curve. And I take on board what the Charter Skipper said..."welcome to the world of boat fishing" __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |
