Sat 6th May Penarth

Hi all.
Locked out at 10.00 and watched all the boats heading off down the coast to Aberthaw. Not too much confidence in my tub at the moment so turned left up towards the Rumney marker buoy. Stopped en route as a nice little ledge appeared on the sounder. Thought there might have been a bass or two in the shallower water. Fished for about an hour and not a bite so weighed anchor and headed further on. Dropped anchor at a spot that I had marked a couple of weeks ago. The mark had already produced codling for me before the wind got up and had to move afetr only an hour. I always said I would go back there as the contours looked perfect. First cast produced a 7lb Thornback, then the kennel opened and a few dogs appeared. Then another thorny about 7lb. Slack tide saw a few conger, the biggest about 8lb. Lots more doggies and a `dinner plate' thornback. All in all we had 3 x rays 6 x conger and about a dozen swansea salmon (doggies). Best day in the boat for me by far.
I couldnt understand though why all the rays were coming from just the port side. I thought about it when I got home. When I was heading east to find the trench, I located it and then re-traced my steps until it showed on the sounder again. Turned north-ish towards the river mouth before dropping anchor so the boat dropped back along the length of the trench. It must have been that the boat was positioned right on top of the bank of the trench so that one side of the boat was fishing into the trench and the other side was fishing at the top of its bank. Hence only doggies on the one side because the channels full of them and conger and rays in the trench......I`ll know next time. You never stop learning do you. Brilliant day though. A little choppy but great fun for pretty much all of the day. Locked back in at 4.45pm for a welcomed cup of coffee........bring on next weekend.
