Lady Helen Penarth Bristol Channel Jan 7/8.....

First weekend of the new year produced a cracking 2 days fishing with 20 plus fish on both days.....Cold ,foggy conditions brought the cod out in numbers ,best fish of the weekend just short of double figures..Worm/squid baits producing all the decent fish on both days...

Some of the weekends fish

Looks like its Cod and chips for tea for everyone......!!!

Re: Lady Helen Penarth Bristol Channel Jan 7/8.....

Nice one Mike. Looks like you`ve hit the right spot. `Fraid I wasnt so lucky. I went down channel and anchored off Sully Island. One nice Whiting about a pound and a half and nothing else. Dropped anchor off St Marys well Bay caught six or seven whiting and codling and i`m still wondering how they managed to get my 4/0 viking into their gobs they were so small. Finally anchored off the Ranny. My mate had something really big on. I even got the net ready but it came off before it had surfaced.......another tale of the one that got away. We used squid and rag all day. Sounds like a case of right bait wrong spot. Still, not giving up. Off out again tomorrow weather permitting. I`ll find these cod if its the last thing I do.

By the way, I was behind the Lady Helen in the lock yesterday and saw your catch laid out. I was green with envy. There were a few boats in the lock at the time and they all seemed to have found the Cod. Some nice fish too, but none in double figures. That ones waiting for my hook.

Well done again.

Re: Lady Helen Penarth Bristol Channel Jan 7/8.....

Thanks for the tip Mike. I think I know where you mean. Unfortunately I launched my boat but couldnt start the engine. Still, i`m glad it happened before I left the slipway. So I packed up, went home, got my beach gear out and went off to the Ranny. The beach was lined with anglers but I didnt see one fish caught by any of them. I had 2 x codling about 3 oz each. At least I didnt blank.
I`ll see if I can sort my engine out this week and get her back in the water for the weekend. I think its only plugs and points so should be a quick job....(famous last words)
