Bristol channel coding on lady Helen Penarth

Bristol channel coding on lady Helen Penarth
With a frost on the ground the morning had arrived for a bit of Bristol channel coding on lady Helen Penarth

Got down Penarth in plenty of time and luckily the bait shop was open on time and with 1lb of ragworm and two boxes of squid under my arm I made my way to the marine

The day was looking like it was going to be a good one on the weather front and with a quick hello to the other anglers we locked out of the marina at 8pm and with a short steam we were anchored up on a reef

The baits / rigs for the day were pennels on 4/0 or 6/0 hooks with about 10 to 20 worms tightly packed to form a 6 to 8 inch solid mass of sent tipped with squid top and bottom . There was two methods on the day with a few fishing downtide method and the rest of us using uptiders with 10 oz grip leads

It was not long before the first cod started to show themselves around 2 – 4 lb in size and all in great condition and fat little tummies full of prawns and crabs

Then tims rod started to nodded and as he was bring the fish in we all thought that’s a better cod and when she broke the surface and was weighed was just under 6lb which was a PB for tim so well done mate

Me and mike were fishing next together and both gave each other the look of `` oh no we have not caught anything yet ``

About 30mins later mike went quiet , which is a sign that hes into a good fish and bugger me the cod broke the surface and turned out to be a lovely cod of just under 11lb

The day continued with more codling and a few whiting and strap conger

The Bristol channel was still holding a bit of fresh water and their was rubbish in the channel

The tided turned and now was on the flood back in , so with the boat now facing the other way – straight into the now picking up chilled winded it was rods out to see what was making its way up the channel

Tim had two thornbacks the first was the strangest one Ive ever see before as it had just as many thorns underneath its body . The next ray was a beautiful 8 inches !!!

Well billy blanker ( me ) was starting to think that this was going to be one of them days but luckily I did manger to get one codling on the day and get the award for stupid looking fisherman !!!

Its was the end of the day we had cod / whitting / ray / straps a good bit of banter

Had a cracking day so thanks to mike and danny plus to the rest of the guys

Good report & nice pics Richard. I seem to recall Henry Gillby talking about Irish Thornbacks having thorns top & bottom. Perhaps that one was an immigrant, "Did you check it,s passport"!!!
