Lady Helen Penarth trip

Had a great trip down and twenty minutes early for the tackle shop to open, so had a cup of coffee and waited and waited and waited for the shop to open but it did not (nothing worse than a shop not opening)

So in a panic I thought I will nip to Tescos which is right next to penarth marina to get some back up mackerel and you guest it they had none ever so now a bit P----- off I made my way to Lady Helen

Meet mike on the boat and told him the bad news but with a quick phone call to danny he was turning around to another bait shop to get the team bait.

About 20 mins later Danny arrived with bait under his arm and for some reason refused my big kiss as a thank you

So we were off and soon at the locks and hitting the bristol channel. (Penarth marine is freshwater)

Only a short trip to our mark and we soon had our uptiders out and two downtiders out with a verity of baits from lug tipped with squid / rag tipped with squid / whole squid and thick lipped mussel



Within minutes my rod started to rattle and with a reel in to take in the slack line on my uptider I made contact

MMMM that's not a cod I thought and as she broke the surface a grey long shape appeared and the first of several conger hit the surface

So knowing the fish were there we all had high hopes that just maybe the cod would be there too

Re baiting regularly as the channel tide soon washes out the sent the fish were steadily coming aboard and it was defiantly a mikes day as he had about 6 rays congers and dogfish

But to top his day he hooked up two rays and a dogfish on his 12lb rod at one time, ok bit was Danny's tackle but it did make us laugh seeing mike trying to get this lot up with the tide running on a 12 lb rod



So what about the cod then?

Well by now the wind had turned to the east and picked up to make it quiet hard to keep your foots on the odd big wave and with this turn in the weather the fish just stopped feeding but mike picked up a late conger



So no cod on this trip which was a shame but I think we did alright in the conditions

Had a cracking day and the rain held off ( just ) so did not get wet

Oh forgot to add this was a private trip with just mike danny and me before the boys start the cod season next week as they only have two dates free and just fancied getting out to fish themselves

Great day, Richard brought chocolate !!!....made my day...and knackered up my diet .


Well Richard said he wanted " CONGER ".......and here it is, just a bit smaller than the 30 lb that he was hoping for !....well about 27lb short really...

Had some knock and on good one but no fish so it proves they like them
