Penrath Wales Lady Helen Report 170905

Well another day on Lady Helen had come

Forgetting that it was only an 1.15 drive I arrived 45mins to early so I had a nice little wait for the tackle shop to collect my bait which for this day was squid lugworm and king prawn. With bait in hand I started the quick trip to the marina but sods law two cars decided to have a crash and after checking and ring for an ambulances I had a mad dash to the boat and arrived 10 mins late !!

But after make my red face apologises we made for the lock gates (suppose there is always a perk in getting the skippers bait)

After a 1hourish steam the anchor was set and the bait was let loose in to the murky depths of the Bristol Channel. Half of us were uptiding and the over half down tiding . Bait that went down were whole squid on pennels 4/0s , mackerel , lugworm , peeler crab , rag worm and king prawn

It soon dawned on me that summer was over and with a little shiver I got a coffee down me and waited for my first fish

It was not that long before a few of the guys were getting knocks and then it was my turn. The tip nodded and then the line went sack; fish on I thought.

Not much of a fight but when she surfaced to my great surprise it was a tope take on whole squid ( I thought that’s 1.5 points and had another on the second anchor )

As the sun started to warm the air the fish started to come aboard with a mixed bag on the day

For people who do not know the Bristol Channel this period it’s a very hit and miss affair as the summer fish are moving out and the winter fish are moving in

The fish caught on the day where

Dogfish
Congers upto 20lb
Tope
Whiting
Smoothound
Thornback Ray

Which I thought was a bit of a result for the time of year but good old mike is never happy ( Although I must say it was a close run thing on mike catching a fish at all – hehe )

One of the best things of the day was that there were a few young ones on board but they had a ball loving every minute of the boat trip and I think they are well and truly hooked on sea fishing

Mike will post the pics of some lovely fish includeing my PB tope which was a result for me as have been trying all year for a tope and finally when not fishing for them I land two

Think I have a cracking fish for next month comp

Thanks mike / danny for a great day out on Lady Helen . Great to meet you Welsh man of the valleys and your daughter

Hope this makes sense as have hit the beer

Re: Penrath Wales Lady Helen Report 170905

Great report mate as usual, and well done!

Glad you got a tope, and the pic of the whiting is 0.5 extra points as well as the 1.5 from the tope

Re: Penrath Wales Lady Helen Report 170905

Almost got a pic of my conger but it did a flick of the head before the pic was taken

BLoody good day as it was hard going and NO ONE blanked even though other boats had a few blanks ( thats not down to the skippers by the way )

Nice report Rich,a pleasure to fish with you as always.Good to meet Welsh Man and his daughter. Not happy ..me !! never, just like to put my anglers in amongst the fish as much as poss. Happy anglers = Happy Mike.

Think we should start a new competition, for the small specimen of any species caught.
