Smoothounds ...........

Cloudy and a bit of a breeze ,and bank holiday monday was looking like a bit of a long day in big swells.Very small tide meant a good chance to have a good try for some smoothounds, before they move off to deeper water for the impending winter.

The Steam down to Aberthaw didn`t hold out much hope for a nice calm outing ,steaming into 2-3ft swells means breakers over the bow and lots of moist people on the boat !.....Not that it stopped them laughing at the one member of the party who was feelin just a little queezy, paying the penalty for far too much whiskey the night before.

The prospects for the fishing didn`t look bright either,so a quick prayer to "Michael Fish the god of weather" and thankfully with high water approaching as quick as our chosen mark, the wind dropped off.Leaving just a light swell to play in .

Everyboby fishing more or less the same gear..Downtiders,3 ft flowing pennels with 6/0 hooks and a variaty of baits.Squid, cuttle fish, mackerel and Tiger prawns.

Within 5 mins of droping the anchor ,a 6lb starry hit the surface, falling to whole squid.Within another 2 or 3 mins another rod doubled over this time a 9lb starry hound,on Tiger prawn. This was to prove to be a deadly bait, cathching 4 hounds in 45 mins to the same angler. He was kicking himself as he only brought half a dozen prawns just to try, along with some lampfrey (where have i seen that before ...Richard !!!!)

14 commons and starry within a 1 hour period around high water left us all knackered , a big hole in the landing net where an excited 10 lb`er tried to leave without having his pic taken, and some smiling faces as for most of the party it was their second fishing trip ever.

The rest of the days produced a few more Smoothies ,a move to deeper water saw a few good congers come to the boat ,best of around 25lb ,as always a good few doggies and a lone Thornback ray to end the days proceedings.

Re: Smoothounds ...........

Not yet ,was talking to someone who`s been getting a few of East Aberthaw, along the beach, not sure exactly where tho.We were steaming back past Aberthaw around 10 pm monday and there was a good dozen tilley lights on ,so must be a bit of action goin on.We were fishing nearer Stout point ,not many people try there from the shore its ok if you fancy a long walk and a climb.Still gettin some big rays of the shore at stout also.Good luck........

Re: Smoothounds ...........

Well done mate, good report. That last picture looks like the smoothie has latched itself onto the blokes 'nads! Is that a new bait? I'll give it a miss, thanks!
