Insane Barrage Session.

When we can, my best mate and me get together on the Barrage in our beloved city of Cardiff.

We were both born there but neither of us lives there.

So it's extra special to fish there. What's even more special is that my best mate's , mate designed the barrage . Or part of it. He's an angler too. So he designed it to be fishable off. At least in part.

So, come Saturday, me and Ian will take a few quids worth of ragworm and drown the buggers in memory of the many trips we spent as kids doing the same thing.

Will we catch a record? I doubt it.

Will we catch anything? Yep, probably pin whiting.

Will we care. Oh yes. We'll have a pint on the first fish, the most fish and the biggest fish.

Will we care who wins. You're damned right we will.

My point?

We've been mates for 35 years and for many of them we've been fishing.

I can remember the bait digging, the howling winds and the blanks. I can remember the laughs, the cold and the times when we wondered if we really were that aweful at catching fish (the answer is yes).

But when all lifes pressures, the job, bringing up kids (in my case), the ages without talking to each other (not a hissy fit, just the pressures of work) and sometimes the fact that one of us lives near Wolverhampton and the other in Banghok, none of this matters.

Because we've got three or four hours down Cardiff Barrage to laugh at each others inability to cast or catch.

I'll let you know whos bar bill was the biggest.......soon.

Re: Insane Barrage Session.

Well we had a blustery day. Got there at about 9 expcting it to the be empty, and is was a bit rammed. Set up (a bit too close to the guy next to us as it turned out) and proceeded to fish.

Caugh about 8 or so whiting, quite a few were big enough to clobber and eat (I know there's mixed feelings on that here, but trust me it gets worse). A few were getting hooked through the gills and bleeding anyway. Most went back.

After a few enjoyable hours of watching a wind put a horrific bow in the line it was all over a little too quickly. Packed up and back to the pub for quick pint before rejoining my family for new years eve. All rather nice really.

Went to cook the "whiting" and now had second thoughts that I hadn't actually belted at least one narrow headed cod on the head instead.oops! Markings looked like whiting but now I'm not so sure and as I gutted and headed them on the barrage I can't be sure now.

Not like me to be so careless.

Re: Insane Barrage Session.

It was actually a really good little day , the wind wa showling. Caught one fish that promptly coughed up a live prawn. Straight on the hook it went and the rod didn't even settle before there was another on.

Always a good session when it ends down the pub :)

I am thinking of taking the shrimp net down next time. Rag was good though, I just couldn't get over how quick they were on to the shrimp.

Re: Insane Barrage Session.

Good to have old mates......get together and have a blast, about the fish, I think this is probably the one forum in the world where you will not get flak for what you keep and eat.
This forum is a fishing forum......nothing else.
