| In search of the Elusive Butterfly.......... The first Milford Haven wrecking trip of the year ,so we were all looking forward to a cracking day afloat ,only one small hitch 25 +mph winds ,and a no go from Andy on thursday evening , so John and i decided to head off to the beaches , insearch of the" elusive butterfly" . Plan for the day was Witches in the morning for a few rays ,then over to Newton for a crack at an early Smoothound. Met up with John @ 6 am and headed up onto the ledges at Witches , a pretty stiff westerly breeze ,and a decent surf running ,this place isnt safe on big tides with SW winds ,but manageable in a westerly although you have to watch the odd big swell crashing over !!!! Fishing started off slowly ,the usual plague of Mumbles Marlin not putting in an appearance, but the tide was a pretty big one ,around an hour before high ,fishing kicked off , a small eyed "butterfly" for me an ounce under 2lb , i managed to get a breaker straight over me as i was trying to land it ,much to Johns amusement ![]() John kicked off with a marlin ,quickly followed by a nice 3lb Small Eyed ,getting it in made a bit more interesting by the handle on the reel snapping off mid way in .I had 2 more small eyed "butterflies" and we both had a few more dogs , as soon as the ebb kicked in ,it was nigh on impossible to hold bottom ,so we headed off to the local tackle shop to collect our Peeler crab ,and get a new handle fitted to JKohn`s reel. Got to newton , had a couple of casts ,but the wind was getting really strong ,malking fishing difficult ,so decided to save the crab for another day and headed off home . First "butterfly" for me ,and a soaking into the bargain ,best Ray went 3 lb for John.![]() __________________ Mike.. | Re: In search of the Elusive Butterfly.......... Well done on the smalleyes lads. Rather you than me, in this wind, on witches. Forecast isn't too good for the next few days - maybe a break on Wednesday. Good luck on the hounds later, I'm not venturing too far till the conditions improve.
