fished the end of the pier a few hours before high tide, had a good few bites only landed a codling and missed the rest.

I used lug worm on a 2 hooked trace.

Sounds like you had a great time , but your Codling is actually a whiting ....

Cod is the common name for genus Gadus, belonging to the family Gadidae.The atlantic cod ,which we catch in our waters is Gadus morhua ,there are also many other sub species of cod

Whiting belong to the genus Gadus , but are a different species of fish , Merlangius merlangus

Whiting are a golden colour , codling tend to be a mottly green , both have the same fin configuration ,the cod has a chin barbel.
