1 Man ,sunshine and 10 species ,a busy day out on the Bristol Channel

Went out today ,to crew with my friend Andrew Alsop on his charter boat Whitewater. we had 1 angler on board for the day ,fishing 6 rods ,as his usual fishing buddy couldn`t make the trip .

Locked out @7 am onto a flat calm sea ,headed off down channel ,into the trenches ,plan being to fish the trench for a couple of hours then swing inshore for a few rays and back offshore again later . The day turned out to be manic for all of us Andy landing fish and myself and Andrew rebaiting ,netting fish and casting the odd rod while Andy was busy reeling fish in. Ended up with 10 species , were plagued by "mumbles marlin" all day,well over150 of em thro the day.

All together Andy boated ..Doggies ,Bull Huss, Spurdog ,Tope, Whiting , Codling, Conger Eel, Smoothound, Thornback Ray, Small Eyed Ray. All fish taken on Squid or fish baits ,even the codling took half a mackerel, one double hook up on a single pennel was a smoothound and codling on half a fish bait .

Andrew and i were worn out by the end of the day ,and i think Andy thought he`d been in a 15 rounder with tyson after reeling in fish more or less constantly all day . A real red letter day for us all.

I`m looking forward to tommorow ,when i`m fishing not crewing ,so hoping for a few fish myself .....


Andy into one of the first fish of the day,which turned out to be 2 fish on the same pennel rig ..( Cod & Smoothound )



Plenty of Spurdog and Smoothounds around munching up baits within minuites of them hitting the bottom



Baby Tope inshore ,and "mum" offshore ,a very unusual dark colour for a Tope



Thornbacks to 10lb and Small eyed rays to 13 lb offshore ...



Bull Huss to 13lb ,and Congers into double figures



Even Codling were attacking half mackerel baits ....

Wow.

That's what you call a good day out. Even better if you can afford to hire a charter boat all to yourself for a day.

i'm off down ogmore this afternoon for low tide over the coral and then fish high by the sealawns if your free....going to see if i can get a welsh record of dogfish in one day!!!!
