Cod @" The Ranny" fishing and beach shelter test run.

Went to Penarth Marina ,to have a cuppa and a chat with Andrew who runs Whitewater , and came home with 6lb of ragworm ,he had left over from a trip ,so with a trip planned for Sunday the bait was sorted for myself and John....

I`d purchased a "Zziplex" (Ian Golds) beach shelter and was keen to give it atry ,after all the talk on how good it is in the wind . With 20mph easterly winds thrashing Penarth i headed off a mark called "The Ranny".Parked up and walked down towards the beach ,it was blowing an absolute hoolie ....

A very lumpy sea and onshore winds ..Tackled 1 rod up and got it in the water ,then turned attention to the beach shelter. placed it so the back would be taking the wind and erected it . Its a doddle to put up ,spread it into a v shape ,cover the lower flaps with some shale ( rocks will do ,or whatevers on the beach really), click the roof brace in ,lift up the cover and click in the back rod ...JOB DONE in 30 seconds .

Shelter fits snugly on a rodbag, only weighs a couple of kilos, lower flaps secured by shale or whatever you have to hand at the venue, also has 4 hand ground pegs

Its very stable when position with the wind coming over the back ,plenty of room inside for all your bits and bobs

With everything organised inside ,set up the second rod and settled down ,inside out of the wind ,marvelous ,blowing a gale around me ,and i was able to read TSF in comfort ,not even the newspaper holding the bait was moving .Even baiting up or changing rigs is simpler ,strap the rod to the velcro rod holders on the top and sit inside the shelter to do it .

Snug inside out of the wind, velcro rod holders are great for holding the rod while you rebait inside out of the weather

Fished 2 hours up and 2 down ,steady stream of bites resulted in 10 cod "fishfingers" and a 5 bearded rockling ...pleasant afternoons fishing ,i think if i`d have been stood outside in the biteing wind, i`d have lasted about 45 mins .

Some of the days 10 codling ,and a 5 bearded rockling ..

!!! Tackle tart !!!,me never ............. I fish scratching rig`s,and keep a sharp eyes on the tips, so generally so long as you see the bite ,and get `em in straight away ,they go off no probs ,sometimes if you miss the bite ,they just sit still on the hook ,as they weight less than the lead ,and cant break it out ,then it can be a bit 50/50 if they swim off or not unfortunatly. On a windy day like today i generally rebait every 15 mins to try to prevent any not going back alive..

Nice report Mike,

Always fancied a beach shelter, but the tide moves too far up and down the beach to be arsed! Good luck for the weekend.

Steve

Same situation with the tide here Steve ,its usefull for certain marks on neap tides ,for winter cod ,so i will only use it ocasionally, beats getting cold & wet . Made fishing in high winds a pleasure instead of a chore.
