Birthday boys butterfly bash 'beravon

To celebrate another year completed on this planet I took K fishing on Saturday night at aberavon. I was down to my last frozen mackeral so took along 2 packs of sandeel, some whole squid and just to keep the eels cold a pack of party squid.
We were fishing into the dark for a couple of hours either side of low water, my favourite time, targets were rays with a backup of doggies and as a last resort anything else. Rods were carp, reels f/s, line 20lb braid. rigs 2 hook flappers with 1/0 hooks & a 3 oz breakaway.
A nice little surf with a side on breeze, fluctuating in strength, kept the rod tips dancing.
Started off with 1/2 sandeel on all hooks, which was not coming back in very good condition. Switched to party squid on the top hooks as was saving the mackeral for low water.
Next chuck K gets a good bite (aren't they all) and retrieves this little ray.

Next chuck another - both on the party squid. then a third before I join in the fun. As we hit low water I exchange the sandeel for mack and K gets a nice doggie.
We carry on catching till 01:30 with the rays getting smaller. Must have had about a dozen between us with just a solitary doggie.
Great night out - good fun with light gear.
