| Aberavon - a bit better K & I fished Aberavon last night, 2 down 2 up (22:00 – 02:00) to try & catch some dinner for today. The manky left over worm was too far gone so we fished chunks of mackerel, taking other left overs, squid, sandeel, party squid & crab. I used a long pulley rig with a 4/0 2/0 pennel, K a 2 hook flapper with size 1 hooks. Just for a change I caught the first fish, woof woof. Then K’s smaller hooks started bagging up on dog after dog, the bites were ferocious with the little rotties bending the rod (2.5 test carp) in half. After about 6 doggies I managed to squeeze a ciggie in and decided to bang out whole squids as far as I could. A couple of foxes came out to play with us, whilst K was looking at one 50yds to the west another sneaked up within 5 yards behind her. Bang on low water I had another doggish bite which had a bit of weight to it. It then went light so I backed up beach winding like mad till I had weight again. The fish continued to head for shore & after a brief tug of war in the surf K called that I had a large lump on the beach & it wasn’t a doggie. My p.b. Bass which weighed in at 7.5 lb, sorry no picture (as in previous post) the camera has been washed & replacement not arrived yet. GUTTED... me not the fish, it was so thick & chunky I can only imagine just how big Baggies were last year & it swam off strongly after a minutes recovery in the water. The dog fest continued at a slower pace as the tide started to flood, K telling me that if we had a camera I wouldn’t have caught the Bass. With the mack running low & tide flooding quicker I put a party squid on K’s top hook. A few minutes later she gets a drop back bite and winds into a fish that pulls back and takes some line. After pumping the fish in with relatively small hooks & braid mainline the most knobbled & horny thornback I have ever seen is on the beach attached to the last bit of mack on the bottom hook. Is this the dinner I promised myself? She weighed in at 5 lb and could have been so tasty in some black butter sauce. Luckily for her she was so ugly that K’s p.b. ray was returned to grow bigger & it was K who was lamenting the passing of the photography equipment now. I pulled in a final doggie on my last squid with wrapped on crab & that was it for the night. So we are going hungry today tins of beans & sausages/ spam/ macaroni cheese/ anchovies gratefully accepted. __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:> |
