gower trip 5/3/10

We (K & I) took an exploratory trip to the Gower peninsula, more of a sightseeing trip rather than fishing, but had to take a rod along. A gentle northerly breeze, bright sunshine and an ebbing tide in March meant that fishing wouldn’t be brilliant.
Started off by picking up some lug from the tackle shop on mumbles pier, then took the road round to Rotherslade, couldn’t see much parking, a few cars were being dumped on double yellows, continued to Langland & went into car park. 110p for an hour 400p all day (gates close at 8.30 pm).
Carried on to Caswell and missed the large car park – will have to revisit.
Oxwich was the next stop, this time the rod was coming out. Parked up (free??) & walked down to the beach

Only had a couple of chucks – sea kept running away as expected. Walked round to the church, I climbed down with the Rod & rest, K walked back to beach. Not sure if these are the rocks for hounds later in year or if you have to follow the footpath further along (Up & up those steps).
Time was getting on so we headed off to Port Eynon & found another car park with similar charges to Langland & gates purporting to shut at 8.30????
Rhossili was next stop

£2 to park (no limits? Not sure when it closes) Walked down to the Worms Head

and had another couple of chucks off the causeway.

Can see those narrow twisty roads being a nightmare in wobbly box season. No bites in just 4 casts, but it was a great day. Will have to find some knowledgeable locals to tag along with and learn where to park & when’s best to fish (any volunteers please drop me a message).
Off to Aberavon tonight to use up the worm.

KKK is on a distinguished road
Re: gower trip 5/3/10

There are some very nice marks for bass and smaller hounds as well as GG mullet, flounder, dabs and of coarse dogs all in that area, trigger fish, squid and Black Bream may need a slightly different approach

Re: gower trip 5/3/10

I think it was 8, including Tesco on the way home.
Swansea rush hour seemed to be in full swing just after 4.

I think everyone is waiting for the rays to start showing - hopefully the big tides at the end of the month will be productive. Hope to get out for a few late flounder before then though.

Used up the worm on a few small whiting from aberavon, on the last retrieve I jumped ahead of K by 1 fish & had the bragging rights for a whole minute whilst she hauled in a double shot. Big open beaches in S Wales are a lot different from the S Coast of England. I have a lot to learn .
Distance casting will be important at low water, but at middle or high an extra 20 yds may only gain you 6 inches in depth.
