Port Talbot - Aberavon Folks - I am visiting PT area (for first time) on Wed or Thu this week. Will have plenty of time for a fishing session afterwards. Am considering Aberavon beach as it's easy to find/park & will have other half with me. Will probably be fishing from mid afternoon into the evening. dropping 8.4 - 8.2 tide (HW midday ish) then back up. Will have 5-6 oz leads/dvices, 1 big bait & 1 flattie/whiting rig. Is there anything I SHOULD know about the area/beach before I go. Do you have any better suggestions? Cheers in advance for all replies. ![]() __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>

Re: Port Talbot - Aberavon Aberavon beach is ok if the trawlers have not just been around that area (They tend to work it an awful lot) there is another suggestion of Jackstones pier which you will obviously see if on the beach but that may not be suitable for the other half. If you dont mind stopping on your way back home then Porthcawl about 10 miles east of Port Talbot can be better fishing off Porthcawl Pier (dont breath to deep, can be abit if a smell in that area) which does produce fish on the very small tides. Please don't fish looking for cod as you probably won't get one as they seem to have been absent from the channel for a few years now, possibly rays, dogs, whiting and eels may be about.

Changed mind Had a quick look at Aberavon, decent swell, Thursday morning & decided on Porthcawl breakwater in the afternoon. Arrived without too much trouble (couple of missed turnings) and found the tackle shop that showed on google. Looked like it has been closed for some time.... would have to make do with frozen squid, mackerel & half a dozen black lug. First off a nice cod each with chips & mushy peas. Then we walked to the harbour & found another little bait shop, that was also closed & half a dozen anglers fishing away (3 on top, 3 nearer harbour). Moved car, put on floaties, walked back to breakwater & 3 were just packing up. Undeterred, mad dogs & englishmen... and all that we fished the last of the dropping tide anyway. first drop Karen gets a double shot ![]() blank avoided . A few more followed as water dissapeared and sand got closer. Having originally planned the trip for monday @ aberavon I was thinking high water midnight - low water 18:00 ish. about 18:45 I remebered it was Thursday and the plug was still pulled out. Never mind - I caught the biggest fish of the evening a 5 bearded rockling. ![]() Eventually the water started filling up again & the wind strengthened, nothing compared to recently but still annoying as was expecting gentle zephyrs. First fishing trip to Wales for over a decade..... Enjoyable, if we are going to be lucky enough to get there more often... very steep learning curve. ![]() ![]() __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>

Re: Port Talbot - Aberavon Sounds like you had an interesting trip, I always find best times for the 'pier' is when the tide is rising to mid range tides. Tends to be quite a reasonable mark but if you have reasonable westerly/south westerly water tends to come over the wall
