| monday 16th Feb Three of us locked out at 07.30 yesterday. Lovely day and due to get better .......we hoped. Steamed down west for about 40 mins where we dropped anchor and waited. The previous reports from boats that had fished here on the weekend were less than encouraging, but the wind had turned westerly now so there was hope. We baited up with mackerel, sprats, herring and squid, but the first 2 hours didnt even produce a bite. Then one of our six rods went mad and in came the first Spurdog of the day. Then all went quiet for another hour, when my rod took a dive, only for it to go slack straight away. The blighter had bitten clean through my 50lb mono. From then on it was a frenzy of bites for the next 30 mins or so. Unfortunately traces were bitten off as well as us landing another three spurs and a conger well into double figures. Best spur of the day was my first ever, this beauty at 14lb.......  .Tally for the day......4 x spurs (plus 3 dropped) 1 x conger. Maybe the westerly did it...or was it just good fishing???? | Re: monday 16th Feb Keana Am planning on going out on Sunday - what stage of the tide did the fish come on the feed? I haven't caught a spurdog yet either so would be good to get amongst them. Cheers Kkyum |
