Penarth 8th Jan 08

Only the second time out in my new Warrior 165. I put her in the water in early Dec but the weather has been really lousy for small boats and the only few decent days we`ve had I`ve either been working or pi**ed. First time out, I nearly blanked. Thank god for the 6" codling hiding in weed on my last cast.
Anyway, I decided to go out today and christen my new Abu Suveran uptider. Howling gale force S Westerly and armed with rag and squid, took the 10.00 lock and headed for the Cardiff grounds. Although the boat handled the rough sea quite well, it was a little too uncomfortable sat at anchor so headed into the relative shelter of the Rannie Bay. Dropped anchor on the last 3 hours of the ebb. Even though the tide was running quite fast, the wind was so strong it was blowing us up past the anchor buoy. First cast was a small codling, next cast another about 2lb then two more really small things. All with their mouths stuffed with sprats. The wind seemed to ease then on the flood so headed off out a bit further but caught nothing else on a poor windy january day.

For some reason I couldnt stop my anchor from dragging. It was a real pain. I never had much problem anchoring with my old boat but that was a heavy old thing with hinged triangular plates. This is a 5kg Bruce (I think thats what its called) with about 3-4 m of chain attached to it.

Anyway, It was a great day out even if the fishing was a bit slow. Great boat, great rod and christened it on its first outing.

Bring on friday (another day off)

Andy

PS Dont know what happened to the font size. I cant seem to change it.

Cool Re: Penarth 8th Jan 08

At Least you got out Andy, shame about the fishing at the moment in the Channel.

Our last trip out of Barry was awful 1 guy blanked another had a solitary codling of 3lbs i had 1 dog fish the rest of the crew didn't fair any better apart from one lucky bugger who had a 22lb10oz Blonde Ray and set a new club record...what a fish!

Re: Penarth 8th Jan 08

Well done on getting out, Me I'm stuck on the sick first with a chest infection and now with gastric bug.No not the sickness but severe pains in the belly.

What rod did you go for Andy?

Me i chose the 4-8oz and tried it out on Kaptin Kods boat on the 30th Dec.
Both paul & pete were laughing as all the bigger fish came to the other uptider and i christened it with two very small cod.Nice action though.

Can;t wait for it to connect with a decent fish and the twist & lok is an excellent idear.

all the best

charlie.....

Re: Penarth 8th Jan 08

Hi Andy.

Try doubling the length of your chain. It could make all the difference. Also how much anchor rope did you have out? If it is rough you need at least 3 times the depth to hold bottom.

Sean.

I bought the 6-10 oz uptider mate. Couldnt afford a reel to go with it though so I filled my SLO30SH with 80lb braid. It was a great combination. I was fishing the other day with a 6oz breakaway. Cant wait to get into some bigger fish now though.

It doesnt seem long ago I was praying "bring on the cod". After such a poor cod season........"bring on the bass (or anything really)". lol
