mullet fishing??

I have wanted to have a go at catching a mullet recently and i dont know where to catch them. I have looked at a few harbours where there are a lot of them swimming around BUT there are signs saying NO FISHING so does anybody know where i can fish for them in the south wales area?

Thanks and hopes your lines are tight!!

Re: mullet fishing??

Charter Skipper should be around soon methinks.
I used to fail to catch mullet all around the place so probably not the best person to ask. For what it's worth though, harbours where food often gets chucked over the side is good. Estuary and water outfall pipes can be good. Anywhere where seaweed has gone smelly and a spring tide is due will be good too, take maggots. It may be worth having a word with the harbour master where you've seen the signs as it's quite possible this may only apply to certain areas. Barry and Newport docks used to have a few too. Whatever though, they will drive you nuts. Someone with more local knoweldge will no doubt be around any minute now. I don't know if lavernock is still worth a go, it's been at least 15 years since I've been there.

Re: mullet fishing??

I know the penarth Sea angling comps have been won with bags of mullet lately. I`ve got a feeling they were taken from the Black rocks on Penarth Head. Havnt got a clue what bait or tactics though.

Re: mullet fishing??

sewer outfalls are top places.. they closed the sewer outfall here 2 years ago

harbours are your best bet.. rivers also hold plenty of mullet but to me they seem alot harder to locate/catch in a river!

remember plenty of bread ... mash up a whole loaf of bread in a bucket with some water.. then chuck the whole lot in.. try to keep it in one neat area though .. dont spread it all round barry docks then float fish just on or just off the bottom (depending on crab activity) and wait for the fireworks!

as for places to fish .. i dunno many in wales... i know neath?.. the river neath?.. there is supposed to be huge mullet in there (so my sources tell me).. also the national mullet club has a match in blue water lagoon? (not sure where that is but its wales somewhere!)..failing that come to devon i'll show ya how its done

Re: mullet fishing??

Huw, anoth trick that certainly worked on the Isle of Wight a couple of years ago was that if you find somewhere the tide swirls back out to sea and you can trickle in bread then you may draw fish in from distance.
A trick I have used succesfully is to stuff bread under the rocks or near the pipes of an outflow and let the tide groundbait for you. Mullet are easily spooked so bear that in mind in what you wear. I've found a fly vest very useful for keeping you mobile drab clothes. One drawback with some more "domestic" mullet is that they can be brazen but drive you crazy. Wilder fish seem a bit easier to cope with once they are on the feed. (easier not easy). It's worth taking a little time getting them confident before you cast a hook too. Too soon and a few bad strikes or a lost fish could put them off.

having said all that I'm sure you will be as hooked on mullet as every other poor soul that goes after them. They can be very hard to catch so keep at it and when you do get one the feeling of achievement is immense.

There are a number of far more successful mullet men on this forum than me , who will be only too willing to help.

Tight lines. I'm off to Pembrokeshire this weekend so if you hear swearing and some idiot stooped near the waters edge throwing bread in and apparently chub fishing in the sea, that'll probably be me.

Re: mullet fishing??

down hear in southampton i get plenty of thick lipped shite sifters , i use a oinon sack filled with bread then hang it over the edge of the boat /pontoon or even stake it down in a creak and leave it for a a couple of tides and then go pack and chuck in a hand full of bread around my sack and fish it though the tide .
you will see them feeding quite quick if thay are around and i just free line bread around the ground bait .
for tackle i use a carp rod and 6-10lb main line with a flouro leader of 6lb , i like using size 4 crab hooks for them as they get very big round hear, but early in the spring i have used size 12 hooks to get a few samll ones
for golden grays :- i get them occ the same way but i tend to get more on free lined maddies inteded for live biat im trying to catch
hope that helps a bit but iv no idea where you can fish for them round your neck of the woods
cheers john
