| Re: Amroth area in three weeks? What kit would you advise? I'd like to spin for a few mackerel, maybe catch a few flatties off the beach. Any bass to plug? May even fish for the odd mullet under a float. I won't be fishing all day every day as this is a family holiday but I will quite a lot. We're looking to stay at Merrixtin Hall farm so it's just within staggering distance. Cheers, Pete. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

| Re: Amroth area in three weeks? Well the weather was absolutely perfect, for snorkelling and sunbathing. ![]() Managed to hit the beach with the smallest tide and a stiffish offshore wind. Ho Hum! Although I span and plugged till my thumbs hurt I only managed ONE bass (high tide, rocks to the right of Amroth), didn't have a camera and the b@@ger got off when I got hold of the leader and went to lift it out of the rockpool, yes rockpool, it had fought it's way in to. Part of me was looking forward to bass on the barbee and part of me said "good fight mate, off you go" so I wasn't too gutted. The satisfying thing is that was my second bass to a floating plug close in so it made up for the lack of other fish. On the snorkelling front I went for a swim near the rocks to the left of wisemans bay. There were millions of small fry and visibility on the day was fantastic. it was like looking in to a massive fish tank, one that hadn't had any fish put in it yet though. What an hour of face down fun that was. No seriously it was great. Swam all over the rocks the to the edge of the rocks where the sand met them. WOW!! It was absolutely brilliant. Course no fish but there you go. Saw baby brill , some crabs (they can't half move when a fat Welsh wanna be sealion goes after them). Lots of Gobies around too. At one point it was obvious that something was having a go at small pockets of white bait. I reckon that once the tides get bigger the place will be alive with bass and mackie. Course I'm back in the midlands now so that doesn't do me any good does it. ![]() Had a cold and windy hour or two fishing with Dan (with Mike skippers Lady Helen), my future brother in law (assuming my sister doesn't scare him too much). I was pluggin in water that screamed NO FISH HERE as loud as it could. Dan was fishing on the Gower judging by how far he was casting. That's the first time I've actually watched someone who knows what they are doing cast and I was gobsmacked Thanks Dan, I appreciate the lesson. Course we caught b@@@er all. It was really funny when we spoke to a local tackle dealer who swore blind that the fish we feeding their heads off all along the coast. Someone should have told all the anglers I saw catching nowt. Hm! must have thought he was talking to tourists methinks. So I went coarse fishing yesterday and today to make up for it. I'm begining to take all this "you should have been here yesterday, it's rubbish today", stuff personally. Yesterday was absolutely DIRE. One small rudd. After some overnight thinking and some cider it was back to th pond this morning and into the fish, hurray! What was really satisfying is that a bloke I'd seen yesterday had a bad morning today too. Now I'm not celebrating the other guys misfortune but the fact that I'd figured it out. The odd thing was that the fish wanted it EXACTLY on the bottom, not off and not hard to, but on. Wierd. Anyway that's enough writers cramp. Thanks to everyone for their tips and I'd like to publicly apologise to TerrySmart for forgetting to take his mobile number with me. I am a prat. ![]() __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

| Re: Amroth area in three weeks? Sounds like you had a nice break, shame it was a bit lacking in fish. Did have a little question. you said "The odd thing was that the fish wanted it EXACTLY on the bottom, not off and not hard to, but on." could you put that in simpler terms as I am not 100% sure what you mean ( still a bit new to the jargon). I only know of popped up, neutrally buoyant and normal. Thanks Mike __________________ Life is brief and fragile. Do that which makes you happy. |

| Re: Amroth area in three weeks? Hi barbelblanker tryed to get out on a 4 hr sport fishing boat but not going out as the tides were too high. so decided to go makie fishing for wednesday. wisemans bridge last week sunday wisemans beach 6am till 9 am spinning high tide blanked 6pm till 9pm spinning high tide blanked monday wisemans beach 7am till 9.30 spinning blanked - makie wrer just out of reach 6pm till 8.30 - one place on a spinner - then the makie were chaseing the white bait on to the beach - hundreds of white bait on the beach flapping about - then my son (lewis)said makie on the beach dad - looked over and there were three makie flapping aroung on the sand - walked over and picked them up - fish in hand bang lights out on the rock ....there is my supper i said looking around to lewis. tuesday wisemans beach 7pm till - 9pm blanked - but again the makie were just out of reach - then this chap turned up in a boat on his own 3 casts then he was in - bass in the net - shouted over any good ( knowing it was big from where i was standing 500 yrds away ) he then held it up it must of been 8lbs plus. wednesday - mackeral boat Jacqueline from saundersfoot - just of the headland by saundersfoot only four fish landed - then steamed over to wisemans bridge - as soon as the engine cut out, i had 2 on the drop - then every body was in , mostley joey but some bigger - then i was in with a gurnard ( 1st ever caught ) the makie were coming in thick and fast by this time. good fun .... anyway filled the freezer with joey makie for the pike fishing later on this year. thursday - tryed the makie boat again but engine probs. 7pm till 10pm - saundersfoot harbour - it was packed blanked again spinning. friday - decided not to fish as the mrs said i was fishing too much - so a few __________________ You smell that? | Re: Amroth area in three weeks? Glad to hear someone caught a few. In answer to the question about just on the bottom. What I meant was that I was fishing a very fine tipped waggler so that, when the float has cocked the hook was just touching but no line was on the bottom. The bottom appeared to be quite flat so most of the time it was just the maggot on the bottom. Because the float is so fine I could tell if it wasn't touching (lies slightly lower) or the hook length was on the bottom (settles slightly higher). This is a very fine tipped float (fine cane insert ) and if you shot it properly it is very easy to see bites "on the drop" as the size 12s don't settle the tip properly. This is a float tht can only be used effectively when it is really calm as any undertow will play havoc with it's sensitivoty. The aside , it shows bites that bigger floats wouldn't even register. Some of the wierdest bites were from carp. The float would cock, settle to the first number 10 then stop, then settle to the first 12, then stop, then finally settle with the bait, rise, then go under (if I hadn't struck by then). Ah! it's great to be back into using micro shot again. Terry, I kept the rod in the car and took it to the beach just in case what you were talking about happened. We heard of at least one occasion when the macie drove the whitebait onto the beach between coppin hall and wisemans. Of course it was one of those "you should have been here yesterday " occasions. I only do this if I'm going to take it out of the car though, too many opportunistic thieves around car parks and I'd hate to lose my favourite rod like that. We're off to the Isle of Wight at the end of the month so I'll have to decline the invite. believe it or not I only spin and plug for sea fish . Cheers all. ![]() __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |
