| Boat Report (Sunday) Hey guys fished in our boat yesterday. Left Burry Port Marina about 9am, stopped on the way out of the estuary for some fresh mackerel bait but only managed one joey so continued out towards Burry Holms Island (Gower coast) and managed plenty of mackerel here. We then stayed in this area anchoring up on a reef about half a mile off the island. The day started with the doggies on the downtide rods before something broke the lead out on one of our uptiders and proceeded to swim downtide and right round the other side of the boat accomplishing a rather impressive tangle-up incorporating both uptide rods and the two downtiders!! The fish was fighting really well but came to the surface really quickly - about 50yds downtide - then all became clear!! It was a Starry Smoothhound which had tangled itself in the rig so whilst still hooked in the mouth it was lasooed round the tail and wasnt very happy! Anyway, it was only about 4lb in weight so I thought it would be no trouble tailing the 'beast'. All was going well until I grabbed hold of the fish and made the mistake of freeing the rig at the same time...... The smoothie really appreciated this act of generosity and twisted away from me in mid air, belly flopped back into the sea and dove back under the boat dragging the three other rods all over the place as all the lines were still tangled!! I couldnt believe we could have such a nightmare with a small smoothie!!! Anyway we accomplished 23 Common & Starry Smoothhounds ranging up to 5lb 12oz from this mark fishing in just 14ft of water. Also plenty of dogfish and a couple of small bullhuss. Running out of crab forced us to stop fishing for smoothies and because the dogs kept hitting our fresh mackie baits we decided to try trolling a couple of shads - no success here - any advice???!! As the tide started to flood we tucked the boat in a small bay called Broughton just out of the once famous South Channel where tope could be caught from the shore.... We caught a flounder more dogfish and some perfectly formed miniature smoothhounds in the bay by trotting worm baits downtide with a watch lead. We fished at anchor doing this method but next time I think we will probably setup a drift to cover more ground and hopefully find some bass!! __________________ South Wales Angling Guide - Shore Angling in South Wales |
