Penarth 23/4

I was hoping to venture up to the Newport Deeps today. When I got out through the lock gates it was pretty misty. I think i`ll wait and follow a few boats out there first. I had a bearing off my chart but its too scarey when I lose sight of the land so I thought i`d stay round the mid Cardiff. The forecast wasnt too pretty anyway...southerly and heavy rain. I only had some squid and mackerel for bait and a couple of frozen velvets (they`re rubbish...has anyone found them any good ?). Anyway, I spent most of the day out there and caught fish for the most of the time. Finished up with a boat load of doggies (ifi`d kept them that is), a conger about 10lb and a thornie about 6lb. One of the doggies I had was almost black. It was probably the biggest of the day but i`ve never seen one with so many large dark spots. When it first broke the surface I thought it was a smoothie. Thinking of trying the Merkur wreck sometime, when its calm enough for me to venture round the point......anyone know how its fishing??

Andy

Re: Penarth 23/4

Hi keana I have found velvet swimmers only good for bass but you can only use them where you collect them from.Take them out of that area and your right (crap) is the word i'd have used.

Nice to get out though plus a few fish can't fault it.

I havn't fished that wreck for years as it used to be an anchor grave yard. wheh we fished along time ago we had pouting to 3lb but it was along time ago.

charlie....

Hi Andy - It's not nice up the Deeps in the mist as those big ship engines always seem to sound much closer than they really are. I'm with you on the velvet swimmers as well. Checked two of the wrecks off the Foreland on Saturday on my way down to Ilfracombe , didn't fish them but just drifted to see if fish were showing , looked pretty good so I imagine there will be fish moving on to most of the wrecks by now. Good luck and take a crap anchor if you have one.

Cheers Dave

Yes I saw the boat a couple of hundred yards from me and thought yu might be on board. They told me what they had caught and made me green with envy. They didnt say where they caught them though. Bet it wasnt by where I saw them......................

Note on those frozen velvets: I use them in the summer off Aberthaw for the smoothies and they work just fine - I've had lots using them. Another thing - was your doggie with the big black spots maybe a huss?
