| Sunday 11th Penarth. Locked out at 10.00am Sunday armed with Peeler(fresh and frozen), prawn and squid......no worms this time, oh and a couple of frozen sandeels from last summer. Wind was a strong south easterly which meant I had to stay inshore AGAIN. So, I sped off to my fav spot off the rannie thats produced fish for me all winter. First Cast, missed a cracking bite uptide. Second cast a nice plump codling in the 3-4lb range. The usual size for this season. Next came a strap conger, then a whiting on a piece of smelly sandeel. Just to round off the day, had another codling about the same size. Thats one for my mother and one to keep the mother-in-law happy. Unfortunately there was a little bit of a drama on the high seas. A small (22ft) boat seemed to be motoring up then drifting down the rannie, with someone on the bow dropping and hauling the anchor (dont know what they were doing really). They seemed to be fishing on the drift. Anyway, they seemed to have drifted quite a way this particular time and then I heard a small boat calling the Coastguard for boats in the area to assist `a small craft with its anchor rope caught round its prop and drifting.` Immediately a craft responded to the call and started to haul his anchor. I then called up the coastguard because I could see this vessel drifting in the direction of Brean, but unfortunately my boat is too small to help in that sort of sea. He then came on the radio clearly distressed now saying he was round lavernock point in the rough sea. (Now I knew exactly where he was and I knew what he meant) The `rescue` craft then came alongside and I was able to point him in the right direction and at the coastguards request I acted as a liaison and kept them informed. Then they launched the Penarth lifeboat which also came alongside me for directions. They all eventually came past me with the stricken vessel in tow.......a happy ending and an interesting day out. Fishing wasnt bad either. Got the 3.45 lock back in then. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right. |
